Hey everyone! I am not a bride-to-be, but I was watching Rachael Ray (May 13th episode) and they had a lady on from The Knot; they were doing splurge vs steal, comparing dresses, flowers, and cakes........the most interesting to me, was the cake. They had the splurge for $2,500. vs the steal for $250.00. I just want to start off by saying, I played along and I thought the steal was the splurge, the steal was much nicer, the splurge looked like a child had decorated it, but then again, this was for tv. ANYWAY, the reason the steal was so cheap- it was made of styrofoam, so they iced over the styrofoam and only the bottom layer was cake, so when you are slicing your first piece, you slice from the bottom and then they take it away and bring out slices of cake for your guests from a SHEET CAKE.
Now, I am not even engaged, but I am not one to skimp here and there, I like to have the best that I can, and I have already said I want a cake from Sylvia Weinstock, but I think this is BRILLIANT and $2,000 is a lot of money that can be spent elsewhere, like on the photographer or getting one of those fun photo booths!. Plus, I am not all into eating fondu that people have had their hands all over hahaha

I heard about that a while ago. Thats a great idea and no one would ever know. I say spurge on the things that are really important to you and the rest be thrify.

Speaking of cakes ! I love this one, but I would just want it the solid tiffany blue and white

I like how whimsical it looks, I really like the way they did the ribbon on top.

You are getting married at the Wynn right? My friend got married there 2 years ago and LOVED it

Yeah I am and Im so excited ! We are doing our first CC-call tomorrow to discuss ideas for the ceremony.

We are having the reception across the street at Treasure Island at the pool side. The ceremony and the reception will all but outdoors in spring. We have been engaged for a year and a half already. We are so ready to get married finally

Styrofoam cakes are also what they use to display the decorations in cake shops. So when you go into a cake shop, and see all the beautiful cakes sitting around-those are what I''m talking about.

Ooooh, I''m afraid I''m going to have to steal that idea! Sheet cake! Never thought of that...
Three tiers of cakes don''t look like there is enough to feed a 100 people to me anyway. But then, I''m a dessert freak, and I like to cut myself enormous slices...

The cake for $2,500. was 3 tiers and the styrofoam cake for $250. was 4 tiers so it looked bigger and more expensive haha

I looked into this and my baker told me that the biggest cost of the cake is actually decorating and not the cake, so doing a styrofoam cake wouldn''t have reduced my cake price much at all. We did a smaller 3-tier cake for display (therefore less decorating) and had sheet cakes to supply the rest in the back

My mom was saying something about that. I think it is a great idea! I think the price of cakes is outrageous.

I saved a little over $200 by having a fake bottom tier with sheet cake instead.
