Hello:

I just bought a wedding band (Allison Kaufman) from a local store - he matched an internet price. It''s in platinum.

I wanted to put an inscription in the ring saying: Love, honor and cherish 9/8/07

However the jeweler said he would probably have to remove the PLAT 950 stamp. I told him to let me know before he does anything because he would have to lay it out on his machine first…

I just called him and he said he removed the PLAT 950 and will stamp it with my phrase.

I didn’t bring up the fact that I told him NOT to remove it (I didn’t want to get him angry) – I just said, “would you be able to put it back on there?”. He said that he wasn’t sure yet until my phrase is stamped.

My question is – how do I know what he is giving me is PLAT 950?

I assume any store can start removing or adding PLAT 950 to 50/50 blends or white gold with people not knowing it.

Any clues how to make sure this is my ring?

Does having it not stamped with PLAT 950 effect the insurance appraisial?

It does not change anything to remove the karat stamp, but if you wanted it there, it ought to have stayed there. Maybe your phrase could have been two lines over the other and they would have been a lot shorter allowing the stamp to remain. Hand engraving could have saved the stamp, also.

I doubt the jeweler is trying to cheat you. Did you have a pennyweight or gram weight for the ring? If so, then the weight shoul;d still be the same. Platinum is heavier than gold.

Platinum is SO much heavier than gold, I would think you could just tell that way. If I hold my platinum ering with a plain gold costume ring there is no confusion about which is the platinum ring, even with my eyes closed.

But really any jeweler can stamp ANYTHING they want with plat 950...so even if it were stamped there would be no guarantee it was platinum!

Yes, pt is significantly heavier - it would be obvious by weight. My plat wedding set doesn''t have the platinum stamp anywhere on it, actually. But by weight it''s obvious to me.

No, I didn't think to have it done.

They are nice people but just freaks me out a little bit that it was removed and I'm kinda have to take his word for it.

They do carry the white gold ring in stock, so I can always feel the difference when I'm there.

I found two local jewelers that matched internet prices for brand named wedding bands. Hers: Alice Kaufman Mine: Diana
big savings on the rings compared to what they wanted to sell it to me from the start - so shop around folks, some places will match
to earn your business.

You will be able to feel the difference in weight if you compare the plat with the gold.
