Hello!

I am in need of some opinions on my wax mold! I have been in the process of creating a custom engagement ring here in CA for the past two months and I need some opinions on the picture of my 2nd wax mold. My designer is already making some changes to the gallery so this is not the final mold, but I would like some opinions on the size of the halo before she makes the changes in the CAD and makes another mold. I am having a hard time grasping how closely the wax mold will look size wise to the actual ring. I guess I am concerned that the halo overpowers the center stone. It is a 3.52 OEC and my finger size is 5.25. Will the actual ring with the metal look smaller than it does right now? I am using 18k white gold and I will have milgrain on all the edges. The way it looks now it almost looks like the ring is going to be as wide as my finger.... will that look bad????

Also what do you guys thinks of the band width? Right now she has it at 3mm. Should I go a little bit smaller? I am going to have an eternity band on either side.

Thank you so much!!!! Alison

I have to be honest, it looked kind of like a big halo at first, and when you mentioned that this was a 3.52 ct. OEC, I realized it was a really big halo! The wax molds always look bigger than they will upon completion, but I''d be worried that the size of the melee might overpower that gorgeous OEC. . .

What size are the melee in the halo? 1.5 pointers?

With a stone of your size, my tendancy is to like the more delicate halos since that diamond could stand on its own with absolutely no problems.

Unlike a CAD drawing of a ring, a wax is pretty much dead on in terms of finished size. With a whopper of a stone, and your tiny fingers, apparently it IS going to be the width of your finger.

Now there's a problem I'd love to have

While it won't be any more narrow, it will look more delicate when it's finished. Some of the sharper boxy shapes will be polished softer, the milgrain will soften the look and white gold will be less of a contrast than wax.

Hi LaurenThePartier! Hahaha... yeah it is going to be a big halo. I am sure some people would say I shouldn''t put a halo on a stone this size, but I love that it will bring out the real antiqueness of the stone. The stone is from my future fiances great grandparents (circa 1880). However I would totaly agree with that I too like the more delicate halos so the center diamond can stand out. I have been looking at this picture since last Friday when I saw the mold and have been worried about it ever since. Maybe it will be alright if the wax mold does make it look bigger than the what it will actually look like.

I don''t know the size of the Melle in the halo yet. I will have to make sure and ask her when I talk to her today. I left her a message to talk to her about the size of the halo and will add that to my list of questions. I will let you know when I find out.

What do you think about the size/width of the band?

Ditto. Beutiful rock, btw!

Well if you are going to wear 2 bands with it can she make the halo band thinner to maybe 2mm or 2.5? Just a thought. It will be beautiful!

What do you think about the size/width of the band?
I love the idea of the setting, especially the squared off halo - it will be GORGEOUS!

Since you''re wearing 2 bands along with it, I would go with about a 2 - 2.5 mm shank.

Your fingers look nicely narrow and similarly sized below the knuckle, so as long as you take into account the total width of all 3 rings together, and size your finger with say, a 6 or 7 mm sizer rather than a 2 mm sizer, you''ll be able to feel how wearing the whole she-bang will feel. I sized my 2 mm e-ring for my normal size of 4.75, and with my two 1 mm bands, things get a little tight, so make sure you allow for that extra width.

Other than that - I can''t wait for this ring to be made! It''s going to be lovely!

Skippy123: Sure since it is a cutsom ring I think she can make the band width to whatever. This is my first ring desgin so this has been a huge learning experience for me!

All I originally told her about the band width was that I didn''t want it so thin that it would make the ring slide to one side or the other. Not a huge fan of those rings that have bands so thin they look like they can hardly keep up the weight of the center stone/design. You know what I mean.

In case anyone is wondering here is a picture of what I am doing in the gallery. This wax mold is not the ring I am doing, but I am taking the scoll design from it and putting it under my radiant halo. I am not 100% sure how the shank will meet up with the halo though. My designer is working on it this week and I should get to see the new mold on Wednesday. I post some new pictures on Thursday

Thanks to your feedback I am going to talk to her about the band width as well. I think I might see if she can drop it down to 2.5 or 2.0. That might better accomodate the eternity bands on either side. While I don''t really think you can have too much bling I certainly don''t want it to look tacky!!!!

To be honest with you, I think a diamond of that size doesn''t need much of a halo, if at all. Since you''re asking for opinions I would have gone with a skinny, dainty halo around such a large diamond, rather than such a wide one. Maybe something with 1 pointers, or even half point diamonds on the halo.

I Just talked to my jeweler and told her all my concerns and she said that she will have a better idea of the size of diamonds that would go in the halo on Wednesday after the new mold is made. I will make sure I re-eiterate that I do want a dainty halo if at all possible. Maybe she is already thinking only 1 - 1.5 melee? We''ll see :-)

I will take more pictures of the new mold on Wed at all angles.

Thank you for the comments and opinions thus far.. they have helped for sure! Alison

I think I would probably make the thickness of the halo and the shank thinner. I prefer really delicate halos, especially on larger stones so that the center stone pops! However, I loooove the profile and wouldn''t change a thing. I really adore those scrolls!

LARGE diamond, on a small finger in a BIG halo = TOTAL finger coverage! You won''t see your finger, just the bling. I hope you have a security guard hired to follow you around when you put that on your finger! It''s lovely!

Hahaha.. yes a security guard and a hefty insurance policy! TRUST me this is way more of a ring than I ever could of imagined. I was hoping for a 1-1.5 carat and I got a 3.5! My future in-laws haven gotten a huge thank you for being so generous!

It has been my personal experience that the wax IS a little bigger than the finished product, so as long as you communicate with the jeweler on how big you want the final product to be, I wouldn''t worry that the wax is too big just yet. Did you discuss exactly how big the melee will be?

Hi FireGoddess! I asked her today about what size the melee around the center stone would be and she said that she hasn''t made a final decision yet. She is working on my new mold today and is going to show it to me Wed afternoon. I told her I didn''t want the halo to over power the center stone so she may be tweaking some of the dimensions but I am not sure. She said that she would let me know Wednesday what size melee she thinks would look good. I will repost what she says. I will also post pictures of the new mold and more angles to hopefully provide a better view.

I am so glad you said that the wax mold does/will look a little bigger than what the actual ring will be. She keeps assuring me that all the dimensions are right on and since this is my first ring design I have to trust her and others like yourself who have more experience with this process. I swear she probably thinks I am micro managing her... yikes!

Thank you for your thoughts!!!

Alison, your ring is going to be GORGEOUS!!! Your diamond is so beautiful

. I want a square/cushion halo too, someday, on my 3.55 ct OEC... then we'll really be ring twins, lol. Anyhoo, I think the side view of your setting is really lovely, those scrolls are to die for. I'm so glad you posted pics- I've wanted to see your sparkly ever since you mentioned it first!

I just checked the appraisal on my ring and the melee around the center stone on my ring is 1.7mm. I would have guessed smaller, because the halo looks reasonably dainty in person. I'd do 1 pointers in the future I think, though, because I would personally like it even smaller. If it weren't for the side stones, the center stone with halo wouldn't *quite* cover my whole finger, but pretty close. (With the halo-ed .30ish side stones, it actually sticks out farther than my finger... subtle it ain't!) For yours, I think anything up to the 1.7mm mine is would look fine. I'd say it's personal taste whether you want it blingier or daintier, really.

So, I don't think it's going to look too big on your finger even with over 1mm melee stones. I know you've seen pics of mine- FYI my finger size is 5.5 in the summer, a bit smaller in the winter, like 5 to 5.25. I wear my rings large, so my ring is actually a 6 though. So my pics of mine are a decent comparision of what yours will look like size-wise, though my hands are stubbier

I can't wait to see it done!

Hi LittleGreyKitten - Oh thank you for letting me know your melee size. This will give me some good info for when I look at the mold tomorrow! I am curious as to what size she will recommend. I looked at your picture again and I certainly don''t think the center stone and halo is too big for your finger. I am crossing my fingers that I LOVE the changes she has made.... I am dying to get this design process done so I can get my ring already LOL. I''ll let you know how it goes!

So I take it you are going to get to keep your ring for good? :-)

I am pretty bummed right now because I just got back from my jeweler and she "forgot" to call me and tell me that my newest wax mold wasn''t ready
8.gif
Luckily I only work about 10 mintues from her office, but the BF lives about 40 min away and drove down for nothing. Trust me she got a tasteful earful from me about how not calling me was unacceptable. She seemed remorseful so I am going to let it slide this one time.

On a brighter note the reason she said that it wasn''t ready was because after I talked to her on Monday about my concerns (and others here) on the halo size she brought it down some! I was a little surprised because she originally told me on that phone conversation she thought the deminisions were fine, but she must have taken a deeper look later and thought otherwise. So thank you to all who provided input. I am hoping Monday will be the final mold, but I am doubtful.

The only other thing that is concerning me is the length of time it is taking to get this project done. We are at 8 weeks now and on our 3rd wax mold. Is that "normal" for custom work?

Thanks! Alison

Personally, I think the "halo" is too big. But that''s because I think itll be too big for such a pretty and big stone. If you had not said that was over 3 carats Id never have believed it.
