Okay, so I know the thread title is gross but still...I''ve had plantar''s warts occasionally on the bottom of my feet. In the past, I''ve used those Dr. Scholl''s pads - the tiny round circles with salicylic acid on them - and they''ve worked quickly and easily. Until now. Mind you, I''ve only had this happen a few times over the years but I got two plantar''s warts right now - one on each foot and each in exactly the same location, weird, I know. I thought they were callous'' from the treadmill so I ignored them for way too long and recently, when I showed them to my doctor she said they were indeed plantar''s warts. So she tried to freeze them off, but nothing happened. So I started using the Scholl''s stuff but it''s hurting my skin. Today at the manicurist, she told me about two wives tales that she claims work. One is taking a little potato slice and taping it to your foot each night (I really dont want potato juice on my nice bedsheets!), and the other one apparently was in a lot of papers - tape a piece of duct tape over the wart and leave it on until it gets ratty and replace the tape. Apparently something in the tape adhesive suffocates the wart and kills it off.

Has anyone heard of these remedies and if you''ve used them, did they work? Or if not, what has worked for you? I''ve gotta get rid of these things and I dont want to have them cut out and be off my feet if I can help it.

Thanks to anyone who has any "wart" info to share!

Surfgirl, I have a friend who does the duct tape thing and he thinks it works. Right now I have a dang wart on finger. It was frozen off but then came back

. I talked to my doctor and said that sometimes warts need to frozen off multiple times (boy does it hurt). Try it.

The duct tape worked like a charm for me. Took over three weeks, and several changes of the tape but they were gone.

Skippy, the doc already tried to freeze it off and YES, it hurts like nobody''s business, doesn''t it?!?

Bizou, can you give me specific instructions on how you did it? Some say to put tape on and leave it for 6 days, then remove, file, and add tape again and repeat. Other''s say to change tape daily. How did you do it?

Duct tape worked for my son, too. It took quite a bit of time. . .over a month of tape and then after that the wart SLOWLY went away, but it hasn''t returned since.

Surfgirl,

Here is a link with instructions for the duct tape method

i''ve heard clear nail polish. you have to reapply all the time b/c you don''t want to let the wart breathe. hubby had one as a kid on his hand and swears by the clear nail polish method after several freeze treatments and every over the counter treatments available didn''t work and the wart kept coming back. he''s been wartless for 30 years now....

A number of studies on the duct tape method have been done and they all come to the same conclusion: it works if you believe it will and doesn't if you believe it won't. Total placebo but by covering the wart so you can't see that it isn't shirking, you convince yourself it is which causes it to do so. I know it sounds wierd but it actually happens with a lot of remidies.
My suggestion is to get salcidic acid in the bottle form, put it on, and let it dry. Once it is dry put A and D (medicated vasiline used mainly for diaper rash) on it and then put on socks to keep it there. You can put the acid only on the wart so it won't iritate the skin around it and A and D helps prevent it from causing further irritation.

Warts are kind of like fire - they can''t thrive without air (oxygen).

That''s why the duct tape thing works - keeps the air out.

aljd, I read that tonight too. I had no idea that warts required air to breathe and multiply. So very weird, isn't it? I always thought warts were a viral thing but never thought they needed air?! Anyway, I was all set to start the duct tape but tonight I went to put a bandaid over it and I can see that a big piece of the top skin layer was ready to come off so I played doctor and helped it along. I think I'll let it dry out a day and then use only the little Scholl's thingie with a bandaid to keep it in place. Then when those thingies are finished (they're darned expensive!), I'll switch to duct tape if it's still there.

Man, I had no idea so many people have warts and that some folks have a really hard time getting rid of these little critters...crikey, it's always something, aint it?!?

Mrs. Salvo, so the nail polish actually works? That'll be my second back up!

I used the duct tape as well. I put on a new piece every time the old one fell off, which was pretty often--anytime I showered or my feet got sweaty (it was summer). I don''t remember how long it took, but the plantars warts really are gone now (I think thats what they were, never officially diagnosed).

My dad gets warts on his hands and he swears by noxema cream. Every time he washes his hands and before bed he massages it into the wart. I''m not sure if it''s something in the noxema itself or if massaging and stimulating the area (increasing the blood flow) starts an immune response focused in that area which forces it into dormancy.

I had a really painful plantar's wart on my foot in college. The doctor froze it and it did nothing so I went back and he froze it again. THAT time worked. Maybe try one more freezing attempt? I haven't had another since.

it did for my hubby. he swears by it. but i guess it''s the same concect as the duct tape and not letting air get to it.

yeah, the suffocation technique! I suppose the Scholl''s thingies are the same thing as well, but with some sal.acid to further burn/suffocate the rascal.

BTW, mrs salvo, you change of avatars is perfect for people like me who dont like change! Just enough to flavor the holiday, but I still know its you! Or, well, your doggie! Such an adorable pup...

I had one once. I tried over the counter remedies but nothing worked so I went to the doctor. That was the only thing that worked for me, but it really hurt a while after the procedcure. I''d do it again if I had to though. I''ve never heard of the duct tape recommendation.

aww, thanks surf, she''s my first baby and I just love her to pieces. I have a halloween picture of her too that I forgot to change in oct.

I used duct tape when I was a kid and it worked for me. Salicylic acid worked too, but you have to be careful not to get it on the healthy skin and try to keep it on the wart only. It just makes the healthy skin kinda peel away.

OK this may sound strange but here goes.

When I was around 12 I had a plantar wart on my left foot. Mom cut a raw potato in half on a full moon night and rubbed in on my wart and then pressed a penny on it an covered it with a bandaid for a week. Needless to say, it was gone and is still gone 12 years later!

And we are normal, well semi-normal. hahah. So that was kinda weird for us to do! But it worked!!

My father used to get warts and his doctor recommended that he take 3 Bufferin a day until they disappeared. I don''t know if this is medically correct, but it worked for him.
