There''s a chance that I will be relocating to the Detroit/Warren area in the coming 1-2 years. Is there anyone from that area? Can you tell me a little about the area? Average diamond size (shallow right), housing schools? I always hear such negative things.

I'm not from Warren, but I grew up in Metro Detroit suburbia.

There's not really much to say about Warren... it's a very blue-collar/middle-class city. I know the residents are a lot older. Eminem was from there, if that helps any.
2.gif
I'm not sure about crime really... the schools are definitely not renowned for the area, but I haven't heard that they're bad either.

I'd say its a very average city... but fortunately, there's lots of other stuff to do in Michigan! It's a gorgeous state!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help! If I had to take a stab at diamond size, I'd say less than 1 carat.

I''m a Michigander too...not from Warren...but it is also known for it''s large Polish-American population. It is a large suburb, but Elle is right, Michigan is a gorgeous state and has lots of interesting places to visit and things to see and do, so if you are transferred to MI, don''t worry too much!
2.gif
We Michiganders don''t bite. (Hard)...LOL.

Where would you be moving from? Just curious!

I know Warren very well. Lived there from 1959 to 1978 and used to work for the City Attorney there. It''s definitely blue collar. Diamonds less than one carat.

Many third generation Poles and Italians.

Most people worked in some aspect of the automotive industry and many have lost their jobs. The real estate business there has an expression, the "warren

ranch". 1000 square feet three bedroom one bath homes. Warren starts at eight mile and continues to 14 mile rd. The houses get nicer as you move away from

eight mile rd and by 14 mile rd. there are some very nice homes. There is a lot of shopping and you are within driving distance to some very upscale areas like

Grosse pointe, Birmingham and Bloomfield hills. It''s also convenient for getting to Detroit. Despite Detroit''s rep there is still great theater there as well as Comerica

park which is where the Tiger s play. Great sports fans in Michigan.

The school systems are good, but not great. To work in Warren you really don''t have to live there. There are a dozen other nice suburbs within driving time

of 20-50 minutes. Both our kids still live in the area. One in Beverly Hills and the other in Washington Township. Due to the auto industry the housing market is

weak. A first time buyer can get a great house here for under $250,000.

The people are hard working and friendly. Michigan is in the process of reinventing itself due to the decline in the auto industry and it could be a very exciting time

to be here. It''s beautiful here. We have the great lakes after all. You''re never far from the water. Last winter was very cold and snowy. Typical summer weather is

Hee hee. Ditto what others have said. Keep in mind as well, that there are other surrounding areas in the Warren area that would still be easily commutable.

Birmingham and Royal Oak, for more trendy/upscale. Novi & Northville, more family friendly etc. MI has a lot of diversity!

ETA: What lulu said!

She said it better.

Another suggestion is to explore this site a little:

puremichigan.org

It has a lot of good info about our beautiful state! Yes we sometimes get a bad rap, mainly due to bad press about Detroit itself...but Michigan on the whole is a great place to live.

Mini threadjack: Oooh anyone else get so sick of those puremichigan commercials though? The music drives me crazy.

Hey, with all of these Michigander PS-ers, we should meet up at a Tigers game some time, LOL! (GO Tigers!) Or a Wings game...can''t wait for hockey season!

LOL...I like the commercials actually, they are beautifully filmed, etc., BUT I did get burned out on them while sitting at the Sec. of State last month, waiting (45 mins.!) to get my new license plates!
23.gif
They played them over and over and over again! So yeah, NOW I am tired of them...but not our gorgeous state!

I am currently in IL my husbands job will be transferred to Warren MI in 2011. I''m not a fan of cold weather and we''ve been looking into alternatives, they just haven''t worked out so far. I am really hoping we''ll end up in Huntsville afterall.

We totally do.

I think people would be shocked to see how beautiful Michigan really is. I spend at least a few weekends up north every summer simply in awe of how pretty the state can be. And the UP in the fall....
30.gif

I live in the Detroit metro area... Warren is an OK area. Close to many other cool cities, too. I work VERY close to Warren (like a mile from there). It does have some not so nice areas around it, but it's nice in a lot of places. Maybe we could all get together and do a "welcome to the neighborhood"/ pricescope meeting!

ETA- I have to echo the others' sentiments about the beauty of this state! In ANY state, when you are near a large urban area, there is crime and not so nice neiughborhoods. But when you get out into the woods and country side here.... WOW!!
1.gif

I''m from Michigan!! Not from Warren though. I actually grew up halfway in between Mt. Clemens and Port Huron.

I''d just have to echo what others have said; there are some not so good areas, and then there are some really great areas. I lived in a small town before moving for my undergrad in Grand Rapids, and in the summer there are always parades and festivals. I''ve heard the Eastern Market is a great experience- oh- and don''t forget Blake''s apple orchard in the fall! (hopefully I''m not the only one who knows what that is
20.gif
)

I hope you like it if you do end up moving there!

Lulu- I used to live in Beverly Hills!!! My mom still does. Lots of people don''t know of it...

I like MI. The weather now is bad but the summers and spring and fall are really nice times for weather. Sorry to say it but MI winters are NOT fun! Lots of snow/slush/sleet... It totally depends on where you are for the winter in MI- It''s sooo cold in E.L. but in H.S. when I was closer to Warren it was much warmer.

I second the fact that you don''t have to live in Warren to work there. There are tons of places to live around there like Madison Heights (i babysit there) and also Royal Oak is AWESOME. Shopping is great there as well as in Birmingham and in Troy.

If you can, I know the Birmingham public schools are pretty highly ranked and always have been. I think they are going down a bit but they used to be nationally ranked as some of the best schools in MI...

My older sister is a ''Wings fans'' booster/greeter...she is always blinged out, LOL... she made a sequined Wings jersey and wears it all the time...so if you see a hyper, blond woman, greeting fans and wearing a sequined Wings jersey, that''s my sister, LOL!

I'm from MI, but I have no idea what Warren is like. I'm guessing it's something like Westland??, but I don't know Westland that well either. There are plenty of nice cities around the suburbs of Detroit where you could live. Royal Oak and Birmingham are close to Warren. I have relatives it that live in Royal Oak and downtown Birmingham. Downtown Birmingham has lots of cute stores and good restaurants (but living there is expensive). Other fun places are downtown Northville, Plymouth and Ann Arbor. They're are places to visit on the weekends. As far as weather goes, summers are hot, I think spring and fall are the most beautiful, and winter.. well the first snow in the winter really pretty but the cold can get to be a little much. You get used to it though :)

ETA: Some cities with good school systems are West Bloomfield, Troy, Northville, Livonia, and I think Ann Arbor, I'm sure there are many more.

I wish I could go! My b-day is the 10th! I''m going out to dinner and then I have to go to my cousins engagement party. Although, I would love to be able to go to the game.

Hi,
We moved to Michigan(Northville) a year ago from western Ohio. We are Pittsburghers so climate, people are similar. We really like it here! But today, October 1st, I actually had to scrape ice off of my windshield(with a cd case) before I took my kindergartener to school. ssaaayyyy whhhatttttt? I know we have more temperate weather to come before the chill but I thought that was kinda crazy
emsmileo.gif
. We''ve been downtown to theatre and sporting events, to Auburn Hills for a Disney ice show, to Frankenmuth to "Bronner''s" famous Christmas store, to Lansing to check out MSU for my daughter, to Ann Arbor to checkout U of M for my daughter....It''s a beautiful state and I am headed north with a girlfriend for a fall foliage day(as hubby and kids can''be be bothered) in the next couple of weeks. Where I live, property taxes are much higher than where we came from, but public schooling is very good, and sports are too. We left a very blue collar community so I enjoy the variety of restaurants(not chain) and shopping in our area.
I live in a fairly affluent area and have only seen a couple of honkers....but even our B&M mall stores have some lovely goodies I like to peruse when I am shopping...
Good luck! I think we are here to stay if the auto industry survives. Hubby works downtown and doesn''t even mind that.
That said, Go PENNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I grew up in northville! I moved away for college and haven''t been back (well, for more than a few hours that is :P) but I''m really glad that Northville was my hometown. We didn''t live in the affluent part of town, and dealing with all the snobs was a bit obnoxious, but I definitely benefited from the awesome schools and safe town. Glad you are liking it there!

OP: I agree with everyone that says to work in Warren you don''t have to live there - I would say that the majority of people who work in white collar eastern Wayne county don''t live there. I''ve lived in Michigan my whole life and I can''t imagine living anywhere else. We are currently west MI transplants (GR) - the whole state is just gorgeous once you get out of metro detroit. If you do end up moving to MI, I urge you to look at the western suburbs like Farmington, Plymouth, Novi, Northville, even Brighton if your husband doesn''t mind a bit of a commute. The schools are just as good as to the north but the cost of living is a bit lower :)

So after you get back from the honeymoon... the Metro Detroit PS''ers must have a GT... maybe Big Rock or something...or Como''s Pizza!

Well we probably shouldn''t get together at Saturday''s game. signed, a wolverine.

I saw this post the other day and didn''t get a chance to reply until now. I currently live in northern Warren. I grew up on W.Bloomfield and DH is from Clinton Twp. and this was our happy middle. We''re close to two of the major expressways and it''s easy for me to commute to and from work. We do live in a typical "Warren ranch" and it''s a great first home. Our plan was not to stay longer then 10 years because I''m not egar to have our kids go through the school system here. There are many other surrounding areas that I would rather have our kids educated in. As some mentioned... Royal Oak is a fun town and Birmingham is very trendy with lots of shops. Michigan is a beautiful state. I know there is a negative vibe when you hear "metro-Detroit." But outside of the city (which does have a few nice areas) it really is a pretty nice state and there are lots of things to go and do.

BTW... if anyone decides to put a Michigan GTG together, I''m game!!

) Not a huge MSU/UofM fan either way but I''ll take some HOCKEY any day!!! Go WINGS!!

Oh yeah... and the very important diamond size question! I have just over a half carat and that''s pretty typcal around here. Head over to Birmingham and Troy... and you''ll see some major bling.
