Hi everyone,
I''ve been using this forum to learn more about how to buy a diamond. I started out looking at Tiffany''s and other stores in the local mall. Now I am more towards buying the diamond on line and buying the setting from a jeweler. I have a few questions:

First the one to do with the title I''ve read about the possibility of a " warped diamond" were cutters put differing crown angles on different parts of the diamond thus the best angle qualifies the stone for a higher cut and also gives a higher HCA score but this is not really reflected in the beauty of the stone. This is even more important for online diamonds. Would a GIA/AGS/sarin report give an average of these angles or just the best?

Second I''ve heard that AGS and GIA labs are more accurate than EGL and that EGL tends to be more generous in their grading - therefore I have been somewhat suspicious of jewelers who tend to have alot of EGL, IGI, AGA graded diamonds. On the other hand I have also heard from the local jewelers that these problems are only related to the Israeli EGL. Is that true or does the Americal EGL also tends to over grade their diamonds.

Third if I decide to buy my diamond online and the setting from a local jeweler - who should set the diamond? and who should service it?

Thanks you all for your time, experience, and help.

Hi lostinround and welcome. there are a ton of old threads about warped diamonds here, just do a search. Pricescope has this section in the tutorial discussing the girlde, about halfway down it talks about warped diamonds:

if you buy a stone online and setting locally, i''d ship the setting to the vendor you purchased the diamond, they are more likely to insure the stone while they are setting it.

The safest bet is to buy AGS0 or GIA Excellent that meets AGS0 standards. Good Old Gold offers helium scans which I understand is even more accurate than Sarin if you really want to see the dimensions of all the facets, etc. My understanding is that well cut stones will almost always be sent to GIA or AGS, so I''d steer clear of EGL personally.

I am also in a situation where I bought a diamond online and am finding a setting locally because I really need to try them on. At this point, I am probably having the stone set locally and that way they can do the maintenance on the ring. I have found two jewelers who cover the stone while in their possession even though it was not purchased from them.

Did they let Fred Cuellar out of jail?

He's the guy who makes up stuff to instill fear so you only buy from him.

Google around.

He has been completely discredited.
