Wanting an engraved stone?????

Hello

I have been reading some good info on this site and have actually found the company I am going to purchase my E-ring from.

Am I being irrational thinking I should have an engraved stone simpply because I am afraid of it being switched out when we take it in for a cleaning? I''m not even sure how I would check even if it was engraved.

Any thoughts? besides >>> lol

I don''t think there is anything wrong with getting your diamond inscribed I plan to get mine done when I eventually get it Diamond switching is not that common but if inscription gives you piece of mind go for it

Inscriptions come in handy to identify your stone but also knowing your stones "birthmarks" is a good way to identify it as well

Personally, I like the idea of having a laser inscription on the stone for identification purposes. In fact, I like the idea so much, we got my diamond inscribed.

As well as allowing me to see that I got my own diamond back, after setting/resetting, polsihes etc, it also meant that I was sure I actually got the damond on the certificate in the first place.

My diamond was laser inscribed with the AGS certificate number, and then returned to AGS so tha the cert could be updated with the information that it now has a laser inscribed girdle, with the cert number on. Soooo, because AGS had my diamond back, I could be sure it was the diamond that was described on the certificate.

Sorry for the threadjack! Cleo, how do you read the laser inscription?! I am having trouble seeing mine with 10x, 20x or 30x loupe!! Are all loupes created equal? Do I just have bad eyes? Just paid $5K last year to get them lasered, so I am hoping this is not the case!!

The cost of my inscription & having it sent to AGSL for the certificate to be edited was only $175... so I hope you had a LOT of diamonds inscribed!

Have to say that I think there is some variety with inscriptions & how easy they are to read. When I picked up my diamond from the B&M after it's last (totally botched) re-set, it took me aaaaages to find the inscription under their bright spotlights. However, we compared the setting job to a 1.5ct ring they had in house (a Canadian diamond) and I coud find and read the laser inscription on that one with ease. It did seem that the girdle was noticeably thicker on that stone though, so perhaps the font was just that bit bigger.

I find the best way to find the inscription is using natural daylight - standing right next to a window works well. I only have a 10x loupe, and I usually have to hunt a bit round the girdle before I spot it... it's not easy. I can *just* read what it actually says, but it helps that I know what it says already, if that makes sense!

I would have thought with a 30x loupe it should be much easier to spot and read.

My eyes are pretty sharp, so I suppose that does help - but getting in the right light is your best bet, and then turn the ring s l o w l y, looking at each girdle facet at a time.

Edited to add: PMSL!!!! Just re-read your post and realised you meant you paid $5k to have your EYES lasered, not your diamond!!! My mistake was too funny to correct the original post, so have a good laugh at my expense!

Cleo, you are too funny!!! I just re-read my post and realised that I probably didn''t make myself too clear. I have headcold and am not really with it tonight.

I will try in bright daylight to find it. I think it''s a thin - medium girdle, but it does have the ACA logo too so it should be easy to find. I know it''s there somewhere!!!

Trooper - you are very welcome.

Probably worth adding that even if the stone you like is not already inscribed, your diamond vendor should be able to arrange to have this done for you, for a small fee.

Don''t restrict your search to diamonds that are already inscribed!

Switching is VERY rare, but it does happen, so no, you are not paranoid, just more cautious than many. You will need a loupe to see the engraving, those are VERY tiny letters!

Inscriptions are not always that easy to read, quite often because they become translucent as the diamond is cleaned and the black residue from the inscription process is removed. Try back lighting the diamond with a soft light and then viewing the girdle edge of the diamond with your 30x loupe while rocking the diamond back and forth to flash the light through the stone / setting.

Sending the diamond back through the lab for inscription is not the most economical method and is only necessary if you want the inscription to be indicated on the lab report. If you just want the diamond inscribed, we refer our clients to Verascribe in Texas, they can inscribe the diamond loose or set assuming that enough of the girdle edge is exposed. I''m not mentioning any other vendors for this service simply because I don''t know of any, but I''m sure that there are several companies that do provide this service.
