Worth is a funny word.

Worth to whom, where?
The same diamond new will be "worth" much more to the customer walking into Tiffany & Co. on 5th Avenue in Manhattan than it would be used to the owner of a pawn shop being asked to buy it in Detroit.

That a diamond has one "worth" or value is a very common misconception.

An ounce of gold pretty much does, but not any diamond.

Kenny, you ought to be an appraiser. :appl:

Jewelers can, of course, pay whatever they want and part of the decision will include issues like how much money they have, how well they do with goods like that, what their current inventory levels are, etc. In most cases bids are free so it doesn't hurt to visit a couple and ask them but a good starting guess for a cash offer in most markets is 50% of what comparable things cost here (not what they cost at Tiffany's). Searching the database is free, annonymous, and a very useful education tool. Consignment deals will usually pay more if you're willing to put up with them but there are a few logistical challenges to deal with that go with it.

Also be aware that sometimes there are issues with the condition. If you haven't had it appraised, it may be worth your trouble to do so but if you don't want to, you can get a pretty good idea by showing it to a few buyers and noticing if they complain.
