want to make a custom ring but don''t know squat

hey all,
i have started the process of the search for a ring and I think i want to have something custom made. I am thinking of having a .5ct-.75ct round diamond, in a half bezel setting, with small sapphires on each side with full bezel settings, on a simple platinum band. This is where I am at after looking for about a week. I would appreciate any sort of feedback anyone would give about this type of setting, ring, pricing, etc. Also, I did hear that the bezel setting reduces the size appearance of the ring b/c some of it is covered. Would that mean that you would buy a ''shallower'' pancake shaped diamond vs. a ''taller'' one?

A picture of the style you have in mind, whether a photo or a drawing, will be very helpful to your chosen custom jeweler.

The diamond should not be too shallow or too deep. Make sure your seller finds you a diamond with proportions that allow the best light return (here is the first of several tutorial pages on cut). For proper spread a .5 ct diamond should be very close to 5.00 mm in diameter. A .75 ct diamond should be near 5.70 mm in diameter. A larger table % can make the diamond look somewhat larger, but the size of the table, crown angle, crown height, pavilion angle, overall depth and girdle thickness must all be considered when arriving at the 'flavor' of look you like.

A .5 ct diamond in a half bezel will look fine. You may want to rethink full bezel for the sapphires unless you have a specific reason (you wear gloves and don’t want prongs for instance), because it will reduce their apparent size. Bear in mind that the color of the sapphires is especially important for matching purposes. There are light, medium, dark and descriptors in-between. Here also, photos can be helpful for communicating to your seller which lightness/darkness of sapphire suits you. Make sure your chosen seller will work with you to match them to your preferences and to each other. This is an exciting project. Sapphire-diamond combos are very striking.

One of my rings is a .50 round diamond accented with very dark blue shappires. Attached is an anniversary ring with both also.
