Waiting for appraisal

I''ve never had anything that needed or that I felt warranted an appraisal before. I got my new ring and wore it for not quite a week and took it to the jewelers downtown on Monday for the appraisal. I was told it typically is an overnight thing. So, today, 6 days later I called to see if it was done. He said "Oh yes. I need to talk to you about that. I have a customer, I''ll call you back" That was at 10:30 this morning. It''s now after 5. I tried calling back an hour ago and they were closed. I just called his house-his wife never did tell me if he was home, she asked if she could help me with something. I said I''d dropped my ring off Monday blah blah, and she said "Does he have your number to call you back?" And I said yes, it was on the sheet when my info was taken down, on Monday. She said she was sure he''d be calling me back then. And I said well, I called this morning and he said he wanted to talk to me about it and would call back, but I haven''t heard from him. She said "Oh, well, I hope he calls you back. Thanks" I said, well I hope so too b/c it''s been a week and I''d like my ring back. And she said ok thanks. And hung up.

Am I wrong to be a little..um..concerned/anxious/irritated by this? As I said, I''ve never had anything appraised before. It''s not a diamond ring, it''s a spinel. This is small town USA, so I don''t know if it takes longer or what..but if he needed to talk to me, why wouldn''t he call earlier, instead of ME having to call him-twice now? And then his wife just shrugs her shoulders and hangs up?

I realize it''s Valentine''s Day tomorrow..but jeez! Am I expecting too much?

well, I''ve never had the appraisal thing done (yet) so I''m not sure, but it does sound weird to me. I hope you get answers and your ring back soon!

I''ve had two done in the last year and they both took a week.... but I did NOT get the run around like you did...

that really sucks!

Thanks Kas and Swedish! When I''d called to ask about bringing the ring down in the first place I asked how long it took and she said to bring the info down and he takes them home and does them at night, so generally it''s the next day or bring it in Saturday and pick it up Monday. If she''d said it generally takes say, a week to 10 days (or whatever) I wouldn''t have even been worrying about it right now!

I told JD what the wife said and that I''d be waiting Monday when they opened to find out what''s going on. The guy said he needed to "talk" to me about it-so..did he lose it? Scratch it? Never done a colored stone before? I see no reason to have no communication with me. So, I''ll find out what I find out I guess!

Thanks Lily! He called about an hour ago..you know what was so all fired difficult? He couldn''t read Dana''s writing on the invoice, so he wasn''t sure what kind of stone it was. He thought it said spinel but wasn''t sure. So, that took all of 30 seconds. Duh? He couldn''t have taken 1 minute out of his day, or had one of his other workers call? Whatever. He said I can pick the ring up tomorrow and the appraisal won''t be done until about the middle of the week. (and fwiw, Dana has probably the best penmanship of any man I''ve ever seen)

Pretty safe to say I''ll not ever spend any money there again. I''ll find someone else to do my next appraisal-someone from here or something next time. And, it makes me wonder if this will be done properly to begin with. I''ll have to see I guess. At least I can have my ring back tomorrow, and my husband doesn''t have to go down there and have words!

Thanks Mousey! I stopped down and picked it up today..there''s a big scratch on the shank-took the rhodium right off. I think I would''ve noticed that when I got it in the mail since I was examining it like crazy..but I can''t swear to it, so I''m trying to ignore it. Argh. He said the appraisal will be done later this week and he would call. I''ll be glad to have this done, and I''ll continue to do my jewelry projects via the internet and the next time I need an appraisal I''ll send it out!
