So, without giving too much away in case she stumbles upon this post:
She is expecting a ring this month and I have been searching very diligently for an awesome stone. Finances are in place, and I have located several stones (~2ct cushion) in my price range that I am very happy with. However, it has come to my attention that to get a setting along the lines that I had in mind (milligrain edging, micro-pave) will take approximately 3 weeks as they must be custom made, generally. The other option is to get a simpler setting carried in stock, propose, then comission the fancier setting when time is not an issue. Several jewelers have told me they would take back the simpler setting for a complete refund toward the purchase of the fancier setting.
So it boils down to: risk not making it in time for this month or get something simpler (which I think she will still appreciate) and comission a fancier setting later which I originally had in mind or which she can pick out herself?
