Wait for custom setting or get stock one and upgrade later?

So, without giving too much away in case she stumbles upon this post:

She is expecting a ring this month and I have been searching very diligently for an awesome stone. Finances are in place, and I have located several stones (~2ct cushion) in my price range that I am very happy with. However, it has come to my attention that to get a setting along the lines that I had in mind (milligrain edging, micro-pave) will take approximately 3 weeks as they must be custom made, generally. The other option is to get a simpler setting carried in stock, propose, then comission the fancier setting when time is not an issue. Several jewelers have told me they would take back the simpler setting for a complete refund toward the purchase of the fancier setting.

So it boils down to: risk not making it in time for this month or get something simpler (which I think she will still appreciate) and comission a fancier setting later which I originally had in mind or which she can pick out herself?

If you can get a full refund from a jeweler on a temp setting, heck yeah I would do that. First, a *lot* of us girls have preferred to be involved in picking settings out, and I think you can get the best of both worlds (surprise/romantic proposal with instant-gratification sparkliness, plus then having some control over what the ring looks like). Also, you would have less stress going on if you weren't fretting about a deadline; I've had a number of much lengthier than quoted custom work experiences, and I know a *lot* others have too with custom work. Even without any sort of deadline, that's frustrating.

Go for the cheap temp setting (with the beautiful cushion)....commision the setting with her input!
Perfect if you ask me!

Is your dream setting her dream setting as well? If so, I would push the time envelope and order the custom setting. It''s such a heart pounding thrill to be presented with the setting of one''s dreams. Since she is "expecting" a ring this month and if you have to push off until December, it will be an even more unexpected shock and surprise.

If there is a reason why you absolutely MUST propose by the end of the month, then I guess the most viable solution is to get the temp setting.
