Hello all,

I was looking for a diamond about 1Carat (maybe a litltle bigger) in a clairity higher than the SIs. However I noitce alot of indivduals that posted here bought an SI (eye clean I would guess). SIs are cheaper so I was wondering would it just be better for me to get a SI and use the money to get a bigger diamond (or other stat)? If I was to buy it off blue nile or White flash of good old gold would they be able to tell me if it was really eye clean?

Thank

This is the only stat that I am not 100% sure what I would like so thanks for the advise

Hi Icce and welcome!

Yes, SI stones can be quite a budget saver if eyeclean! Many (?most?) PSers would gladly take an SI stone of a larger carat weight if eyeclean.

WF and GOG can definitely tell you eyeclean on their stones in their possession (just make sure you are clear when you talk to them about your definition and their definition of eyeclean)

BN is more difficult as most of their stones are drop shipped (meaning physically located with another vendor and they are acting as the intermediary for the sale and do not have the stone in their possession) - only their signature ideal stones are in house and, although they can call the drop ship vendor that actually has the stone to check eyecleanliness, people here have had mixed results with that (sometimes they are correct and sometimes they stone is not actually eyeclean and has had to be sent back)

I would think that you should be able to find an eye-clean SI1, even SI2 (but that might be a little more difficult). I know that many people here on PS trust those at WF and GOG to give an accurate description of the diamond and whether it is actually eye-clean or not. I myself just recently purchased an SI2 RB, and am very pleased. So if I were you, I would definitely be on the outlook for an eye-clean SI1 and put the rest on the money towards a larger diamond. Always keep in mind that an excellent cut is king!!! Good Luck with your search!!!

Thanks!

Also is an ideal cut better or H&A (I only see H&A really pushed on Whiteflash is there a reason for this)? I have always got the feeling it is just personal preference on this (am I right?)?

I was looking at this once http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/A-Cut-Above-H-A-cut-diamond-1467021.htm# but waited too long..it was sold a day later lol

All H&A stones ARE ideal cuts, but not all ideal cuts are H&A. So a true H&A is a "tighter" cut usually. Whiteflash "pushes" them because they are their own brand of stones that are cut specifically for them, and all the ACA''s are H&A. They are great stones though.

But yes, it''s mostly a personal preference whether you need the H&A or not.

Sorry I am bad with abbrivations...ACA? a cut above? So in the H&A I can see the hearts and arrows in the scan and other ideals don't. Is it just a pattern on it sorta (what is it purpose?)? Does it effect the value making it worth more or less etc?

Yes

My stone arrived today and I must say that the facet pattern is tighter and cleaner than a similar weight GIA excellent stone I recently returned. It performs better in lower light situations too which I think is the real difference. In very low light, the arrows shine neon white :) There are more bursts of color too. If I were to give a grade, the GIA excellent stone I had was a B+ and this is an A. Both are great but this is just better. Was the price difference worth it? to me it was but some may argue.

As for clarity, I fond comfort in a VS stone and did not really want to chance an SI stone due to time contraints but with some effort, you can find an eye clean one.

The stone will be set in the next week or so and will post pics when it arrives.

Is GOG and WF the best? Should I search on James Allen too? I usually search WF but they seem to cost a little more there...not sure why

GOG, WF and Allen are all great. I just think GOG and WF give more info so I would place them both at the top.

James Allen requires quite a bit more work on your part IMO because they carry a much wider array of stones...some that aren''t so nice. And GOG and WF provides more information for the consumer too.

James Allen will give you all the info that WF will, you just have to ask for it. I just purchased my stone there and was comparing to a stone at WF and saved quite a bit. My stone is an H&A and it is truely amazing......
