How do I get long lasting volume in my fine hair?

I am so sick of my flat, lifeless hair. It''s very healthy, but it just looks so boring. It''s long, 5 inches past my shoulder, and a light brown color. It''s very soft and fine, but not thin or thinning. It has not been processed in any way. The last time it was dyed was nearly 4 years ago, and that''s all been cut out by now. All I ever do is use a volumizing shampoo and blow-dry it upside-down. I have tried styling products including root pumpers, mousses, etc, but I''m looking for less hassle.

I have been told that dyeing hair can make it seem thicker, and I am wanting to mix up my look a bit. I would really like to have a sandy blonde color. Does anyone know if dying my hair would give it a little boost? I have also considered a new-age perm. I really love the look of hair with wide, spiral curls. Anyone with fine hair had a successful perm? Or a nightmare perm, for that matter?

Any advice would be most helpful. Thanks so much!

I also have fine hair. I have my hair highlighted and it really helps a lot. It adds a lot of volume and makes my hair thicker too. I hope this helps.

Ditto! Sefinitely try some highlights. Having overly healthy hair can actually be a bad thing for us with fine and thin hair. Mine is not only fine but thin to the point I''ve started using rogaine. I''m only 27! It does seem to be helping a little!

I got a perm! Just PLEASE dont let them use the little white rods like they did on me! I looked like a poodle! Or as my hubby said "A white whoopi goldberg" It looked horrid on me! Well, I got in the shower, added conditioner, brushed it out, got back in the shower, added leave in conditioner...and now it looks GREAT! Nice wave to it and gives it body!

I got a perm and the rods were STILL too small even though they used the largest in their arsenal. I liked the results for about two months and now my hair has grown out. I still have the thickness that I wanted but now I''ve lost the lift at the roots. A perm isn''t really the solution you''re looking for IMO.

I use CHI volume booster. http://www.folica.com/CHI_Volume_Boos_d2302.html

Have it cut to shoulder length or a little longer and have long layers put in. Highlights wouldn't hurt either.

The length of your hair is most likely weighing it down. The layers add lift, dimension and movement. The highlights will add more dimension which will give the illusion of fuller thicker hair.

I had pretty long fine, straight hair last year (probably about your length) and I cut it into a chin length bob only to discover my hair had changed to wavy with clearly defined curls at the back. The length was pulling the curl out and weighing down my hair.

Thanks everyone! You''ve given me a lot to work with. I''m definitely going go get some color action and probably take a few inches off too! I''m so glad there was a helpful solution out there. And, I knew that if there was one, you gals would have it.

I just wanted to mention that all my life my hair was thin and lifeless too, until I found the greatest hair stylist(and now my best friend) who gave me a great cut. And even though I go from long to short and back to long again, my hair always looks great. People always say I am so lucky to have such great hair, but little do they know that I don't. So find a stylist who knows about hair and can teach you a few tricks to keep it looking great with minimal effort!

I have partial highlights and layer the front of my hair. I leave the back one length so that it is easier to put up. In the past, when my hair was longer, my stylist has also just put layers in the front, and in the bottom inch of the rest of my hair. That makes it flip and have life when I blow dry it.

When styling it, I use moose, that gives me a good amount of lift. When I blow dry it, I use a thick round brush and while my hair is wet, I use the round brush and wrap the hair the opposite direction I plan it it laying. That gives the roots life. Then when it is almost dry, I focus on the ends using the round brush to make it lay the way I want it.

Hope this helps.
