My boyfriend has been asking me about what style of ring I like. He has a family diamond that I think is a little over half a carat. I like the idea of an heirloom diamond and don't have any need for a huge stone. I looked through the under a carat thread and thought there were a lot of very pretty rings there, but I'm still having trouble picturing how the style I like best would look with a smaller stone.

Do you think this ring would work with a half carat diamond? I have short, stubby fingers. My ring size is a 5.5 or 6.

ETA: The stone in the picture is 1 carat.

That ring should work fine for a half-carat. I think it is a very pretty style, it really shows off the diamond.

That''s beautiful and I think would work best with a ''smaller'' diamond. Where is that setting from, I have never seen anything like it?

That setting reminds me of Niwaka designs. If you look them up, all the models are shown with diamonds under .50 ct. I particularly like the Moonlight setting. Someone here has it I think? I think the one you have pictured would work well with a half carat center.

This is actually a very important point, which folks who are buying need to keep in mind...in many cases the pics you see on the internet may be taken with stones substantially larger than the one you may be considering purchasing for that setting.

A smaller stone can, and will, look very different than what your mind's eye/internet pics may tell you, and you need to recognize this prior to purchase to avoid being potentially disappointed/surprised

Thanks for the opinions. It''s from Stardust Diamonds. Unfortunately, the only local dealer said he had some problems with stones falling out of their designs so stopped carrying them. I think I might see if we can get someone to design something similar, but make sure it''s a secure setting.

I checked out the Niwaka website -- gorgeous rings. Too bad I''m on the wrong side of the country to go their store and browse.

Oh, so sorry to hear that about the setting. It''s so fluid, simple yet has an interesting twist.

Sholdt makes a similar setting - and you can check which retailers near you carry their designs.
