Thank you for giving a cat a home. I''ve lost a lot of pets too and the only way I''ve found to stop the heartache is finding another buddy sooner rather than later.

Every humane society is different - the one in Toronto, Canada is not ran very well although I still encourage adopting from the humane society. Other options include rescue groups - there are lots of animals in need.

The vet who saw my kitty yesterday (because he''s become ill) said that it''s very common for shelter kitties to have respiratory problems. This explains why the HS gave me a coupon for a free vet exam (*any* clinic in the county were the society is located - my choice) and also gave me a free month of the cat insurance. Leads me to believe they know that the cats are high-risk and will be brought back, severly ill, if not quickly taken to the vet. I didn''t activate the insurance in time, but used the coupon (obivously), which I''m grateful for being given.

The vet said that she isn''t against adopting shelter kitties, it''s just that with adopting from CL or families, there is a lesser chance of the cat being over exposed to illness.

Kitty was dx with a fever, upper respiratory and/or having a cold and was given IV fluids and anti-biotics and is on a wet/canned food diet. He''s sneezing a lot but is more active. Last night while I was in bed, he was nibbling softly on my hand.

Oh, she said he has an extremely beautiful coat and that''s a sign he hasn''t had any long-term illness, just something contracted by being around so many other cats.

I am glad he is getting treatment and should be fine in no time!

I just want to comment on adopting kittens/cats from shelters. If people didn't adopt shelter animals then those animals would be (at least where I live) 'euthanized' (not the correct word IMO because these are healthy animals). For the most part these are healthy cats/dogs with minor issues like URI's that can be easily treated.

I am so happy you adopted your kitty from the humane society and I hope you and your family enjoy him for a long and happy time!!
