Just received a 1.48 VS2 I round brilliant diamond already set in the ring today. Looking at the diamond from the side, I can see one of the inclusions. Is this normal? The diamond is GIA graded and I will be getting it appraised tomorrow. Should I be concerned? Thanks.

Are you sure it is an inclusion? The girdle of the diamond does reflect through the pavilion and it can look like a feather.

Clarity is graded face up, so it is totally possible to have a VS2 that is not eye clean from the side.

This is what Dreamer is talking about:

ETA - If it looks something similar to this, just search girdle reflection and there are tons of threads explaining what it is and that it is completely normal. I grabbed this pic from one of the threads.

I looked at it at different lighting conditions and angles and it''s definitely there. Based on the plotting from the GIA cert I think it matches the needle plot. Everything else about the diamond is absolutely fantastic. Faces up very clear and white and sparkles like no other. Probably not a deal breaker for me but my thought now is whether to change to a six prong head to maybe cover it up.

I was planning on proposing this weekend so changing the head would obviously delay that.

thanks for the pics. based on that it''s not the girdle reflections. the inclusion definitely has the looks of a needle or feather. i guess it''s more a "mind clean" matter than anything really. i''ll see what the appraiser says tomorrow. hopefully everything else comes through ok. he''s a known and highly recommended PS independent appraiser so i trust i''ll get a thorough inspection.

good luck.

Girdle reflection! So THAT''S what that is! When I first took a good look at my loose stone from underneath, I noticed the girdle reflection (although I didn''t know until now what that was) and I was like, "what the heck is THAT?" My diamond is a VVS2 - my sister''s diamond is a VVS1 and when I inspected hers, she had the same thing. Neither of us had any idea what it was. I had always intended on asking a jeweler or PS about it, but had never gotten around to it. Thanks, lucyandroger, the mystery (for me) is solved!

Clarity is graded face-up.
Diamonds aren't usually admired from the side; they are made to reflect light out the top!

If you want 100% eye clean from all direction, you'd better pay-up for a VVS1.

Personally, I think that a barely-noticeable inclusion is good. Only you can see it in the correct light and correct angle. But it gives you peace of mind that your stone is genuine and is a unique "fingerprint".

I have a VS2 that has a tiny *something* visible (group of three tiny crystals), face-up, at six inches, after a couple of minutes inspection, from the correct angle and correct lighting.
But nobody else would have much chance of seeing it because they won't know it's there, nor the angle/lighting required to see it. Once the diamond is a little dirty through everyday wear, you get tiny specks of dirt on them that look like inclusions anyway.
