Luckily nature is amazing and the size of the baby is almost ALWAYS deermined by the mom''s genes. So if you were small, you will be fine. I''ll let you know if that theory runs true in around 6 weeks

Thanks for the info about mother nature and baby size. My jaw was on the floor when I found out DF was a 10lb+ newborn and stayed in 5 days past his due date. Yup, his newborn pic looks like he was 3 months too! I was adopted, but from what information I have about myself as an infant, I was a small baby. Thank goodness! My [adoptive] mom and her mom didn't talk about these things, so she knows nothing about childbirth or being pregnant. That was a little odd, I know, so I'm on my own for finding out how the whole thing works...luckily I have a few friends in med school who are more than happy to share their L&D experiences and also pricescope for first-hand information!

Hooray for 6 more weeks!

LIB, the preggo thread is a GREAT resource so don''t worry! I looked at DH baby book and his foot print is HUGE. His newborn foot wouldn''t have fit in any of the million of newborn clothes (people gave us) with the feet attached. So hopefully our baby will be more like me (I was 5lbs 11 oz and three weeks early). So even full term I would have been considered a small baby. (I am only 5''1" so I just cannot IMAGINE delivering a 10 lber)

baby size: mostly determined by mom...i was 6lb 13oz & my son was too....my dad is 6''4" and 210, was a BIG baby, and both my brother and i were smaller.

episiotomy: so not a big deal. didn''t even feel mine. Hurt afterwards but they give you a peri bottle to squirt yourself with warm water when you go potty, so its fine. Now delivering the placenta was odd. I looked at it. grody.

Gosh, how can I say it? Its not really that bad. Of course, I got an epi, fell asleep and woke up to push & never felt a thing. It was heaven. Watch, my 2nd baby will be the exact opposite...oh well...nothing you can do, try not to worry, our bodies are MADE for this & its really incredible!

I know THEY say that a baby''s weight is usually "predetermined" by the weight of the parents, BUT...I was 8,2 and my husband was 8,5 at birth. I was my mother''s largest baby. (BTW-she had 4 au naturel-and calls me a wimp for having the epidural!!) Our son was ten and a half pounds! I delivered, induced, a week before my due date. All of my grandma''s 5 children were at or over ten pounds. SO, maybe it skips a generation? Also, I have three cousins who were near ten pounds at birth and barely break 100 pound at 30ish years old. SO, birth weight isn''t necessarily indicative of future weight. (also, I didn''t have gestational diabetes or anything. And, I gained a total of 21 lbs.)

Ummm, my bro was 10/11, and I was 9/10! I''m thinking c-section for me? I mean, is that even a choice? I have a set of wide hips conducive to birthing, but I don''t know...if I''m one of these that''s going to have ginormous babies is it possible to request a c-section? Jeez, I am not even pg and here I am all freaked out about this. Well, this isn''t the first time, I should say I''ve been freaked out about it ever since my mother told me she had 72 stitches after my brother. Yikes. Of course that was 34 years ago.

I have heard too that baby size is determined by the mother. Her own birthwieght is a huge factor.

This certainly applied for me.

I was 7 lbs 8oz when I was born and my kids were:

baby 1- 8 lbs exactly

baby 2- 7 lbs 2 oz

baby 3- 7 lbs 5 oz

baby 4- 7 lbs 8 oz (she matched my birth weight and funny thing is she looks exactly like me too.)

All 4 of my kids were within 8 oz or less of my own birthweight.

somethingshiney, I never said birth weight had anything to do with future weight. In my family a baby over 8 lbs (well really 6.5) is large. So a 10lber doesn''t seem THAT far off. But I agree, big baby!

Monnie, I have a high chance of needing a c-sec. Don''t stress. They only make a 4" cut *really* low. Not sure how many stitches. Sounds like your mom had a "classic c-sec" where they cut you vertical down the middle. The almost NEVER do those anymore! Only if the baby is about to die and they are out of time. Also the size you are INSIDE is not always the same as OUTSIDE. Hard to tell about those things. I am sure if the baby is getting too large they will induce so you can have a VB.

Asscher, since I was so small my baby will probably be bigger than me but then again I didn''t go full term. In a hurry to see the world I guess. I am hoping for the 7 lb range (if I could have my way).

Yeah, see, Monnie you understand my fears! I know birthing is what our hips and everything in between are meant to do, but man-oh-man: ginormous babies, stitches, all that stuff

....on the brighter side, I have heard of ppl scheduling inductions and c-sections. Discomfort for Mommy is to be expected and I think ppl should do what is best/less traumatic for the baby too...

I guess it is comforting that natural childbirth has been going on for quite some time. We wouldn''t be here if it didn''t work...

I mean, if anyone was walking the gangplank, its yours truly here..

Monarch: My 100lb cousin who is narrow hipped and 5 ft tall has popped out 6 babies from 8 to 10+ lbs without pain meds & no problem. My stepmom delivered large sons with nothing but Lamaze. My very large wide hipped girlfriend (she''s not fat, just over 6ft and a big person) couldn''t deliver her tiny baby....you never know.

WIDE HIPS/NARROW HIPS do not guarantee easy or hard birthin''.....its the space in the pelvic bones INSIDE your body & there is no way to tell until you start pushing. No one can determine it by looking at your width. That''s a wives tale. I have narrow hips & I pushed my son out in 25 minutes with a 6.5 hour labor.

But here is the thing. The head is what''s hardest to get out, and not ALL 10 POUNDS are in the head. If you have a chunky baby in there, remember, fat squishes easy. Once you deliver that head & shoulders its *slooooooooooooooooooooooosh* and plop...out comes baby.

I''ve done this once before & am going in to be induced tomorrow & I have to admit, I''m more excited than scared. Sure I''m a little nervous....after all I have a 3cm fibroid tumor blocking my cervix, and if it blocks baby''s descent, I''ll be having an emergency c-section, but thats the ONLY thing that scares me. But I have a 70% chance of pushing past it, so dat''s some good odds.....

Seriously, I know how scary it is when you''ve never done it before, and truly, sometimes it can really hurt/suck....but if it were really *that* bad, no one would ever have 2nd or 3rd children. And in reality...its really cool. I was so high after the birth of my son. A baby came out of me. A real live PERSON. Now that''s impressive. I don''t care how they get out, but the fact that I made SOMEONE just blew me away. And now he runs around singing Rehab by Amy Winehouse & Push It by Salt-n-Pepa...its too weird.

So don''t freak ladies (of course you will though) but remember your bodies are made to have babies--it might be foreign to you, but its NOT foreign to your body....and if something goes awry, well, there are wonderful docs & nurses to help!

VIVA LA EPIDURAL!!!!

Wish me luck tomorrow...off to watch the birth video again...its like a game plan. LOL...GO TEAM!

I never meant to imply that you said anything about future weight, I was just taking the opportunity to put any fears at rest.

Just for the record, I have BIG hips! I was induced and never dilated more than 6cm (in 39 hours of labor.) I think that was God's way of saying. "Ain't gonna happen!" My c-section was quick. I was prepped at 7am and my son was born at 7:27am. It did take a while to put me back together though. My c section was a little over 7 inches wide. I was up and around that evening, and took a shower the next morning. So, I had a really easy recovery. (although I still don't have feeling in parts of my abdomen)

I think you CAN request a c-section from some drs. I've never known anyone to do this except if it would be their second, third, etc child after having a section for the first.

My thought is staples here, stitches there, whatever. You're still holding a baby when all is said and done.

SS, okay, I didn''t want you to think I was. I don''t think just b/c a baby is big it will be a heavy adult (for the record

). We were just such tiny babies I can only hope it counter acts DH''s big baby genes. Either way you are right. Once you are holding that baby I am not going to be thinking about much else! Team green is winding down (and taking its toll) and now I am really excited to know if I will have a daughter or son.

Nope, we have no idea. We could have found out a few times but we stayed strong! 90% of people (including PSers) are guessing its a girl. Only time will tell now. I am just glad baby FINALLY got into position. Had us worried for a bit. Now we just have to agree on names.
