Victor Canera policies?

Hi everyone,

I recently upgraded my e-ring and was thinking of resetting the diamond in my original one since the upgrade is a similar style. I was really drawn to the octagonal settings, and have heard really good things about Victor Canera and I love what I am seeing on his website. I reached out about two settings; one is sold with a moissy and the other says "special order". Someone wrote back saying neither style is offered as a pre-mount but that they might make an exception for the moissy one. I was a bit confused since the second said "special order", thinking it could be made to fit my stone. So I wrote back and asked for some clarification about it - he wrote saying some settings are offered as "pre-mounts" and others sold with a center (meaning, I guess, that you would be required to buy the stone from VC in order to get that setting). I gave the lab report number for my stone and am waiting to hear about the "exception" that might be made (it's the weekend so I don't expect to hear anything until next week) but I was just wondering if anyone knew about these policies. I cannot find anything on the page that talks about it, and I also cannot find anything that is sold specifically as "pre-mounts." I have seen some stories on PS though of people using their own stones and working with VC. So perhaps the policies have changed? He has glowing reviews and beautiful work.

Victor gives preference towards customers who buy the diamonds from him. I think that's the main policy. He occasionally will fit in an order for a setting using the customer's stone. I think it depends partly on how busy they are, and he also wants to set high quality diamonds and gems into his settings.

That is helpful to know; my diamond might not be 'good enough' as it's an Si2...the GIA report is older before it would give a grade to the cut too.

I don't think anyone should be insulted if he turns down a stone. He won't set mine because it is a style stone he sells and he doesn't set AV stones, but I still have the greatest admiration for him. I recently helped with two pendant projects for my daughters using old family stones (one of which was my original e-ring stone), and David Klass did a great job on those.

I’ve read good things about Klass too! I don’t feel insulted- I haven’t heard back yet as they did ask for lab report. I’m just thinking I may be told it’s not possible based on what you told me :)

Hi OP! I was informed by VC ‘s team they won’t set my stone only if I purchased a stone from them. I’m not sure if that’s all year long, but I did ask them recently so it was one of their busiest times of the year. Ask David Klass? I like a lot of his settings.

I'm not sure as to his policy but I got my studs from him and was 1000% pleased. He was the only one that responded to me on a weekend (Nick). So hope you hear soon!

I recently saw Victor’s settings in person and WOW! You can tell they are hand made- the prongs and craftsmanship are to die for. He will be more expensive than DKJ because it is hand made. I’ve also seen DKs work and it is stunning. You have a tough decision to make. Maybe get quotes from both and compare? Although I adore DK, I just chose Victor to do my upgrade because of the quality of his work. Victor was more expensive, but I did ultimately select him (I also bought a stone from him)

Thank you I kind of planned to do that. At this point I’m just putting feelers out because I just upgraded my e-ring and having spent on that, will have to save it for the eventual reset. But I wanted to get an idea and I really liked the octagonal settings.

Working with Victor on a setting is more like letting an artist do his thing. When I was working on the octagonal setting, I told him my preferences, but I did not specify stuff like, mm of base, width of shank, type of engraving. I just asked for a big base. He preferred small, and all his bases to the time when he made mine were small. He nodded and I trusted him. He thought my more square octagonal idea was clunky and he thought 8 equal sides were more beautiful. So I let him do his thing, but he knew what I preferred. I wanted low set and he said medium. Again, he knew my preference but I let him do his thing. The result, everything as it should be. So yeah. If you work with DK, you may end up more in the details, and that's great if you're good with it, and some people prefer it that way too.

Let us know how it goes. I'm excited for you. Anything he does is gorgeous, and I find my setting super durable. I honestly don't see any scratches with the naked eye. However, I'm sure a loupe would reveal more. I wear my ring almost 24/7.

I fell I love with one of Victor’s diamonds but it was sold before my boyfriend could gather funds. Unfortunately, my heart wasn’t set on any others in his inventory and none were a close match to what I was looking for at a price point that made sense for us. When I told Victor and asked if he would set a stone I purchased elsewhere (superideal cut), he said no, not for the setting I wanted (even though it was not listed on the setting page; and has since been updated). I was devastated but went a different route. While I longed for Victor to make my dream ER, I was not willing to purchase one of his stones to do so... best of luck to you!

@LLJsmom Your ring is absolutely amazing. Again they said they would use the diamond in one of the two settings I asked about. So are you guys saying that all of his settings are handmade? Because that one seems to already exist, and the other one, which they said they weren't able to do with my stone, said "special order". If I were on the edge of "yes I'm going for it" then I would call and ask more details of what that means. But since I'm more of the "thinking about it but need to save more $" phase, I will wait until I'm more ready to ask specific questions.

Gosh I am sorry to hear about that. It is so strange how people seem to have varied responses to the same inquiry.

Great review. I’m a super laid back person and although I have a lot of opinions about life in general I can let an artist shine in their best environment.

Thank you @Mreader . I think all his settings are hand made. Specifically hand forged, meaning he doesn’t use a mold, doesn’t cast. Check out some of his IG videos. The ones that are available are probably partially premade. Seriously just a guess. But those are the simpler ones that just take less time.

That's great that they replied that one of the settings is possible for your old diamond!

But are you also saying that your upgrade diamond is in a temporary setting and will be reset later, too? I think maybe we need to hear about your upgrade news!

Well it’s being sized but no basically my upgrade is just a new ring entirely lol it’s a 2ct up from a 1.16 and it looks so much like an e-ring, and also it is kind of similar to my original in style, that it’s going to replace my e-ring. So no it’s not that the new diamond went into my old setting or anything. The new one is also an oec so different in that way. I’ve attached pics of upgrade, and also of original e-ring which is an mrb in a Jeff Cooper setting. What I was thinking of doing is removing the diamond from the Jeff Cooper and changing it, and the Victor octagonal settings were what attracted me the most so far. But again still haven’t made any hard decisions E23E6A30-18C2-4276-8CC9-4D873F324F1F.jpeg E922F8CB-2E66-4544-AA45-E059B63B84E3.jpeg

I didn't think the new diamond was going in the old setting, but I wasn't clear whether you were planning to reset the new diamond, also! But I love the setting the new diamond is in! Actually, I like the first ring very much, too! Will you be wearing the old ring on your right hand? If so, I really like the 3 stone setting for a right hand ring! I think they look very different due to the different shape side stones plus the different cut center stones.

I couldn’t wear it on the right bc it’s a tad tight - I used to be 4.75 and now I’m more of a 5 on left and 5.25 on right. I’m one of these crazy people with a healthy collection of rings haha so I rotate my wear of them! Sometimes I feel like the three stone looks a bit dated which is why I am considering a reset, then I have a fit of sentimentality. Like I said no hard decisions yet :)
