Hi everyone. A few days ago, I posted about getting advice on a setting. I floated with the idea of Harry Winston/Tacori/Gabriel & Co/ Martin Flyer. A PS member opened my eyes to hand crafted rings and gave 3 names, two of which were Victor Canera and the other SK.

After doing my research, I'm convinced that this is the way to go and after seeing the post comparing VC, SK, and LM, I have decided to go with VC.

My question is this. While I am sure that VC's craftsmanship is fantastic, in relative terms how does he compare? For example, how would you grade his craftsmanship compared to a Harry Winston's setting? Is he great for the price he charges or are his settings the creme of the crop in terms of craftsmanship? I'm not here to contest his skill and craftsmanship. I'm just trying to get a sense of where he stands compared to the big names out there. Also, if he is indeed better, can someone specifically explain to me what it is about his rings that makes it better? Obviously, I can ask VC this question but I would like a 3rd party to answer this question. Thanks in advance.

I find that thread you are referring to unfair but it reflects honest opinions of the poster. Each of the artists are fantastic at what they do and excel in different things. They are penalized because they were asked to make different things.

Anyways, have you seen VC and HW work in person? I have never seen VC's work but I own pieces from LM and SK and I have been to HW a number of times. Their work is comparable and some will say better.

Thanks for the reply charmypoo. I actually learned a lot from your posts. Yes, I think it's unfair and my honest opinion is that THAT particular post didn't influence my decision on settling on VC.

Anyway, I haven't seen any of the 3 so I was reaching out to anyone who had the means to compare them to other settings. I'm not interested in VC vs. SK vs. LM. I'm interested in how these three compare against other jewelers such as Harry Winston, Van Cleef, etc.

In my opinion, better than T&CO and Cartier and even debeers. Harry Winston has some pretty fantastic pieces but I find that their pieces are not always consistent (depending on which city I am in). Either way, I would say that the quality of these three are right there with them. It could be a rumor but I believe SK and LM have / had / does contract work for these top design houses.

I posted some Cartier store pics here

Charmypoo thank you very much for the link. That was very informative. This reaffirms my decision to not go with brand name settings.

I would put Victor up against any of the major jewelers including HW for a pave setting. And I think you can get a better quality diamond by choosing one yourself over buying at HW, Cartier, etc.

Thank you very much diamondseeker. If I may ask, can you please tell me specifics on how it is better? I understand that VC does not use casts, but I fail to understand how this makes it "better" because I have limited knowledge on how that affects the final product. If you could tell me some specifics (e.g. perhaps VC ensures the best possible fit for each of the small diamonds since he handcrafts it, while casts make you force fit the diamonds into the mold). If you could provide such details I would greatly appreciate it.
