Hello,

I found a stone that looks interesting according the the GIA report (I'm going to check it out in person in the next few days), but the girdle is very thick - extremely thick (faceted) on the GIA report, which is causing some concern for me. If the stone looks good, would you still go for this? Or not really?

It's a deal-breaker. You're going to be hiding a lot of weight in an extremely thick girdle, for starters.

since you're looking for a cushion cut and this is one of the few cushion brilliants your jeweler has been able to find...I would check it out with your own eyes and see what you think.

this video might be helpful in understanding different types of cushions

ya well, i've checked a lot of jewellers, and everything here is cushion modified brilliant. the one with the extremely thick girdle is the ONLY cushion brilliant that has turned up. even cushion modified brilliants are tough to find at the moment. so yes, i am able to make some concessions on the specs, but this extremely thick girdle sounds like a pretty big negative.

the thing is, i don't know THAT much about diamonds, so maybe i won't even notice the difference an extremely thick girdle would make on a particular stone.

I don't know that much about diamonds, either, but I do know that stones with thicker girdles will "hide" their weight there, which means you're likely to get a stone that faces up small for its carat weight, so while you might be paying for 1.50 carats, you might only be getting the look of 1.35 carats. (Just used those number as an example as I don't know the carat weight of this stone or its dimensions.) So, if you have your heart set on the "look" of a particular carat weight, you'll do better to keep looking and find a stone with a more proportionate girdle.

If it were a round, I would say it's a bad thing, but it's a different story with cushions. It's totally acceptable to have a medium to think girdle. Cushions are tricky and it's very difficult to go on lab certified specs alone. It doesn't really say much. You need to look at the stone and ASET/Idealscope images. I also think cushions show color more, so I would stick with the lowest color you can for your budget, even if it means dropping the clarity. I also agree that there are a lot of crush ice cushions out there. Not my fav either.

ok thank you.

anyway, this jeweler is trying to play me for a fool i think. he's trying to get me to pick one based solely on the GIA reports. he also says there's no difference between a cushion modified brilliant vs a cushion brilliant.

You should be talking to Jonothan at Good Old Gold.

Big ditto! You are limiting yourself to mostly inferior stones where you are looking. If you want a good cushion, you need an expert who has a selection on hand plus can call in excellent contenders. You may not notice the extremely thick girdle, but it will result in a smaller diameter top view which is something that would be a deal breaker for me. I want the stone to face up as large as it should for it's weight.

i sent an email to GOG. the problem is i live in Canada, so there's added complications at the border. there's also the bonus of paying cash locally (assume what you will with this last comment).

Ah, well that is a complication. But if you want an excellent stone, you may have to buy in the US.
