I don''t understand how this gia certified diamond can only be a very good cut but an 0.8 on the HCA. How would it compare to an excellent cut with an 0.8 on the HCA? Also, it falls inside the white outline for AGS Ideal on the HCA chart:

Measurements: 6.38 x 6.48 x 3.93 mm
Carat weight: 1.01
Color: E
Clarity Grade: SI2
Cut Grade: Very good
Depth: 61.1%
Table: 58%
Crown Angle: 35 degrees
Crown Height: 15%
Pavilion Angle: 40.4 degrees
Pavilion Depth: 42%
Star length: 50%
Lower half: 80%
Girdle: Slightly thick to thick, faceted
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very good
Fluorscence: None

I think it could be the 40.4 pavilion angle is why it gets a VG cut grade if I remember rightly and the thick girdle, but some VG cut grade can be stunning diamonds and excellent performers. The HCA can only predict performance, it is used for elimination and not selection, so you wouldn't really be able to compare with another diamond which scores similarly as too many variables, Idealscope and other cut analysis would be a better comparison. The thick girdle could be hiding some weight, a 1 carat round should face up at about 6.5mm thereabouts, but this still could be a nice stone.

Can you get an Idealscope image for this diamond if you are considering it?

Thick girdle.

No, I won''t be able to get an idealscope because it is owned by a local individual.

Ok, ask if you can check it out in different lighting conditions to make sure it still looks good to you. Is it in a jewellery store, or a private sale?

Private sale.

Private sale.
Ok proceed with caution, I would recommend you get the diamond examined by an independant appraiser and make the sale final on it checking out. Here is a tool you can use to find an appraiser in your area.

When you get below 40.4 on the pavilion angle you start getting much more leakage. Since the 40.4 pavilion angle is an average of the 8 facets used to obtain this number that means that some of the facets are below the angle of 40.4.

Also take into consideration that Garry loves the shallower angles, so his HCA tends to reward those and punish the stones with greater angles.

This stone could and should be a looker, but it also could be just a little less brilliant than a similar diamond that has slightly greater pavilion angles. The eye will be an important tool to use here, and your pocket book. As a private sale you should be getting a much better price than you would pay on line.

Thanks for all the feedback. I will let you know how it turns out. They will have to come down in price to make this work. I will definitely get it appraised if we get that far.

yes let us know how it works out for you
