After reading pages and pages of someone else that was having a diamond purchased from GOG and then set by someone else (I didin''t get to see the final outcome yet..I only got to page 2 so far), I decided to post and ask to see how many others may have done this.

I am purchasing a setting from my jeweler. She showed me three or four diamonds so far and said that she could get extras in if I wanted to see certain specs. I then came here to PS to ask and everyone seems to think that I should just order from GOG (which I see two--and H and an F both pretty close in size. )

questions:

ONE:
I really like the idea of an F for color because I feel that the small stones will look whiter (I read that too) and the F will be a step up from the g small stones helping it match more. HOWEVER , do I want to go to VS1 when the other stone was a VVS2?

TWO:

When purchasing the setting from the jeweler, should I give them the chance to find a stone for me or just go ahead and order from GOG as I have found the perfect diamond there. I want to give the jeweler the chance, but doubt she''ll find anything as perfect as I did. Do you think it rude or odd that I say to her that we have two diamonds on hold by someone else and just see if she can match the price and find the stone similar???

THREE: (sorry I said I only had two)!!! :

I did get a quote from Sisters Jewelers and their price on the setting was $2,000 less! Do you think I could mention that to the jeweler or would that be too rude? As I wrote in previous posts, they have really been EXTREMELY Helpful in helping me choose my setting so I do want to give them the business when I purchase.

FOUR:

The setting is a Verragio (which most people already know from my previous posts). The setting takes 4-6 weeks and I think that they keep the stone that time too. Is that okay??? They say that it is better if they have the stone from the beginning as they make the setting to fit that exact stone which makes it better.

I have to order this by this weekend. My hubby keeps asking me every night if I finalized and ordered!!! He''s getting agitated

Hi, Ally! I''ve answered some of these before, but I''ll give you my opinion!

1. No, you do not nedd an F stone in a setting with small G stones. You are fine with F G or H. So choose which color you like. All will be fine in the setting. You will see ZERO difference visually in VVS2 and VS1, I promise. They are both excellent and above the clarity level most people here have.

2. She is unlikely to be able to match the quality and price. I gave two jewelers the chance to do that and about all I saw was premium cut stones at the same price as ideal cut ones on here. They didn''t have hearts and arrows stones either. You risk making her mad if you give her an ulitmatum like that. I almost think you''d be better off just telling her how much you have appreciated her help but that you have found a diamond you love elsewhere. But of course, you can try asking her to match.

3. I knew you''d find the price difference to be huge. All the regular jewelers I went to charge full retail for settings. I just personally wouldn''t want to pay an extra $2000. But again, you can try asking her to price match, but she probably won''t be happy.

4. Of course it is okay to send a stone to Verragio. This is what they do every day. They are a big name designer brand. I personally might want to try to insure the diamond just to have double protection, but they have insurance too in the extremely rare event a diamond is damaged while setting. But I really don''t think you need to worry. Many of the designers who make custom settings to fit your stone require that the stone be sent to them for setting. Tacori is another who does. Vatche does, too. Ask Sister''s to be sure about Verragio covering the diamond if they damage it. But that is extremely unlikely.

I was trying to decide on mine by the weekend, too, so I understand how you feel! At least you know which setting you want!

DS,

Thanks once again for your help!

I do risk her getting angry, but then again, $2,000 is alot of money! Perhaps I could just mention it.

The only reason that I am worried about sending it to Verragio is that they''ll have the stone for the entire time that they make the setting! PLUS, I''m still concerned about getting my exact stone back! (especially if I purchase it elsewhere other than the jeweler!)

I feel like this has turned into a bigger issue than I wanted it to and I keep going round and round. Funny, you have the stone picked out for sure and I have the setting!! I am tossed between two stones...an h and an f. I really thought that the F would work better with the smaller stones being G but doesn''t sound like you think it''s going to make a difference! Well, I''ll let you know if/when I make the decision. I really need to let the jeweler know what I''m going to do!

Let me know if you have any other thoughts and THANKS SO MUCh for all of your help!

Hi Ally,

I agree completely with diamondseeker

. If you are really worried about getting the same stone back, you can always go through and independant appraiser as the middle man. Of course I think you could have the completed ring shipped back to Jon at GOG and he could also verify it''s the same stone for you. But for peace of mind it might be worth it to you to have Jon ship the stone to Richard Sherwood or one of the other highly recommended PS appraisers, Rich can verify the stone is what you purchased from Jon and then send it to Verragio or Sisters or even your local jeweler if you go that route. When the ring is done, Verragio will send it back to the jeweler and you can have them send it to Rich for the final check and then back to you. It''s a lot of travelling for you ring though. If it were me, I''d probably do it just like Mike did. It seems the easiest and he ended up happy. Seriously, do not worry about your stone at Verragio, it will be fine. As for you local jeweler, it''s up to you if you want to spend 2K more, but it may be worth it to you to stay local and have that convenience too. You could always tell them you priced the setting at a couple of other places and would they be willing to negotiate a bit.

oh, and you will not see a difference in the color. there are people here with J stones and have side diamonds and they can see a difference from the top. F-g-h is just fine..
