Vendor Asking Questions to Place Order

I placed an order with WF today and gave my cc info over the phone. Then I filled out their authorization to charge my cc form and emailed them a copy of my cc card and driver's license. Next I received a call from their accounting dept. and the rep said she had 4 questions to ask me. She listed former house numbers and addresses, some from 15 years ago, and had me choose which was correct. Well I failed the test because some of her multiple choice answers were incorrect! This seems crazy and intrusive. Those who have ordered from WF, what was your take on this?

Re: WF Asking Questions to Place Order

I was asked the same things on my order...

Re: WF Asking Questions to Place Order

Even though I understand the frustration, they do this to protect you. They are making sure people aren't ordering diamonds with stolen credit card numbers.

Re: WF Asking Questions to Place Order

I haven't ordered from WF, but this happened to me once when I was trying to obtain my credit score. I didn't find it obtrusive, but it was challenging, I lived in a different apartment for each year I was in college, 20 years later I can't remember the street numbers of each of them. Did they offer you a resolution? Will you be able to place your order?

They were closing for the evening and will deal with it tomorrow. I'm frustrated because it might hold up my order.

I can feel how frustrated you are. :(sad I'm sorry. Worst case, could you transfer the funds from your cc to your debit and make the purchase that way? or cash advance and wire transfer?

I'm sorry. I'm sure it will get sorted out right away though.

This must be a newer thing, because when I ordered in 2009, they didn't ask me any questions, I just had to fill out a form. Or maybe they do the security questions for orders over a certain dollar amount?

I didn't have to do that either. And maybe because I'm a repeat customer, I didn't have to do it for subsequent orders.

with James Allen I had to e-mail them with a work e-mail to confirm. twice

I'd rather be asked a few questions than have someone trying to buy a diamond with my CC. I'm sorry that it's holding up your order though. I would be frustrated, too.

This is coming from your credit card company, not really WF. It's an anti-fraud thing. It's irritating to be sure, but it's part of the process if you want to use a credit card on a large transaction thesse days.

No, I'm sure this is a WF thing. Last week I placed a BN order for a similar $ amount and a few months ago ordered a diamond for 3x the amount from another online vendor using the same cc with no issues.

I purchased five or six items from WF (last one in May 2011) and was never asked any additional questions. All payment info was handled through fax. I had nothing but great experience with them including the way they handled payments, returns and upgrades.

Sorry this happened to you, but our Visa was used for $4000 at the Four Seasons in LA and for about the same amt in power tools just last week - I was glad the CC co caught it!!!

The thing is I notified my cc company of the amount of the charge to already have it authorized for the purchase. So I don't see why the vendor had to do a background check on my residences from 15 years ago and hold up the process.

Hi,

I've ordered from WF twice and recall them requesting that my CC company be notified beforehand so all would go smoothly, and it did. They didn't request any info from me. How did WF get your previous addresses? Have you ordered from them before and moved after that time?

I was told the questions were due to the dollar amount. Anyway, I wasn't contacted again by phone and I received an email that my cc card was charged and the order was being processed.

great that its being processed, plummiecat! May be it will be easier the next time you order something from WF, but I'd rather have them extra cautious than end up treating some thief to a lovely treasure that you pay for but don't get to wear ;))

This whole mess with credit card processing is why I prefer using wire transfers. One I do not have to worry about fraud, as the credit card company will always side with the retail client, regardless of whether or not they have verified the charge before I accepted it. Two, it costs the client less as there does not have to be a charge built into the sale to cover the costs of the credit cards. Those cash back cards cost the merchant a fortune!
