I am trying to find a decent ring, but I am bewildered and overwhelmed by the number of different factors that need to be balanced.

I would greatly appreciate the community's help on the following matter.

Question: I located the following ring for approx. $8200 with the following specifications:

1. Color: E; 2. Clarity: VVS2; 3. Carat: 1.13; 4. Girdle: M; 5. Depth: 61%; 6. Table: 59%; 7. Sym: VG; 8. Polish: EX; 9. Culet/Fluor: No/No

From the perspective of a lay person like myself, I believe that the diamond is priced competitively in consideration of the quality of the diamond.

Question 1: Is there something I am missing which might be undermining or tempering the price of the diamond, e.g., cut, pavilion angle, or crown angle?? What are the ideal pavilion and crown angles??

Question 2: Are Hearts & Arrows (H&A) an inherent property of a diamond cut ideally or is it something you can assert into any diamond?

Thanks in advance

Definitely get crown and pavilion angle from a Sarin report.

Do you really want E VVS2 or are you just not sure what is good quality? Because you can drop that VVS to VS and still not see a darn thing in the stone AT ALL (provided the grade is accurate). If you really want colorless, keep the E or go to F...but I would definitely drop the clarity to VS at least.

For a 1.15 E VS round brilliant, assuming it's very well cut , or H&A....estimate around $7000 online. So you may not be overpaying for VVS...but you are overpaying BY getting VVS in my opinion.

Assuming you want it. Hee Hee.

Anyway get crown and pav angles, but also price around online to compare!! And look at some VS stones to be sure you know you REALLY want VVS and the markup associated.

Hearts and Arrows patterns are the result of optimum internal symmetry. A diamond does not have to match Ideal cut parameters to exhibit the H&A patterns. 8*, a branded diamond line, is an example of diamonds that are not always Ideal cuts but are H&A's.

Here's a link to the Cut Charts for your reference:

I found one comp available at Blue Nile. Same color, clarity, 1.11 carat, similar table and depth %'s. The asking price for the diamond is $8716. Blue Nile tends to be a bit pricier than most of the PS Vendors when comparable diamonds are available.

To get informed opinions about the make, you'd really need to provide crown and pavillion, and diameter information. This ring may be a good choice. It obviously appealed to your eye. But as Mara pointed out, you may be paying a premium for the clarity when a VS will serve you well. F color will also help you maximize your purchase power. People typically cannot descern color difference between adjacent color grades.

Thanks for the information PQCollectibles! I'll check out the link. I always thought that H&A was an artifact of an ideal cut. I really didn't know that H&A was an internally inherent property of the diamond.

My choice of clarity is a reflection of my desire to show my utmost appreciation to and love for my financee to be. I realize that VS1 will suffice, but I prefer to spend extra to get her something special. I am quite aware that the word "special" is wholly relative and, of course, subjective. As such, this is just the way I would like to express how special she is to me. If it is possible, I would like to give her the most perfect diamond, but, like most people, I can't...at least not now. May be someday. Keep you fingers crossed for me. Respectfully, C60.

Not a problem, C60! As long as you are aware and informed. Some people want VVS because they think they need that level of clarity to be eye clean. You have an emotional desire for that level and you should definitely go for it! Diamonds have to mentally pleasing as well as visually pleasing.
