Value of ring

Sorry this is a repeat and I am relatively new to pricescopers... but I wanted to try and keep the threads organized.

Can anyone tell me if I made the worst purchase of my life in terms of price I paid for this ring? It is an uncertified diamond 0.83 ctw VSI with a color of approximately at the I level. The band is shared prong and my wedding band is also the same shared prong band. A price of about $6000 was paid for it. The head was also custom made because there are diamonds on the prongs.

Although this is a question for the pros...I do think you over paid. Any chance you can return and start over? You can get quite a bit more for 6k with a pricescope vendor.

For 6k you can get a full carat stone that is certified with an excellent cut and a similar setting.

Sorry I should have been more clear... I paid about 6000 for the diamond and two 2 shared prong bands. Is it still a bad deal?

Not a bad deal, but I personally would like a stone that is certed because it may be possilbe that your stone is smaller and lower in clarity/color. You could definitely get a certed stone in your carat weight and the setting with the 2 bands for the same amount of money.

ugh sorry my mind is all over the place - the bands are also eternity bands. the total 6000 value includes the tax so I guess the true amount paid was closer to mid $5000. Any inputs?

Get it independently appraised. They are the professional and will be able to tell you how much it is suppose to be worth. You need to insure it anyway and to do that you will need an appraisal.

I might possibly trade in the diamond so I do not want to spend more money on it. I would like to know if I got a good deal or not, which will help me determine whether I try to continue working with the jeweler or go somewhere else.
I''m just looking for a general idea as to whether it was a rip off.

Ditto the independent appraiser idea. To get a true estimate on value, you really need to know what the actual specs of your center stone are and other aspects of the setting which we can''t estimate, such as the size/color/clarity of the sidestones in your setting.

Take the suggestion to get it appraised. I was under the impression that shared prong rings cost more. The prongs on your ring have tiny diamond melee, so that is going to cost more too. Plus you have 2 eternity bands. Here is an .83 ct. AGS Ideal H/VS2 from GOG that is priced at $3588 bank wire. If you don't want to keep the uncertified diamond, maybe you can get something like that. But I don't know for sure if you over paid for 2 shared prong bands with the e-ring having diamond prongs. Pretty ring, BTW.

My opinion is that I don't think the overall price you paid is outrageous.

I used the search tool above and prices for 83 pointers ranged from 2,500ish to 3,500ish. There were a couple over and under this range so I did not include them. Granted these are certed stones but I'm just trying to give you an idea. That plus the two rings is not a horrible deal.

Hey, I look at it this way, there is always a better deal out there than the one we go after. It's just the way life is.

I tend to agree with the others in that you might want to get an independent appraisal done. You will need it if you want to insure your rings.

Without any specs on your stone it would be impossible for anyone here to give you a dollar value. And since it is uncertified you can''t be sure how accurate your jeweler''s specs are. If you own it and love it, it''s probably a fair price. The shared prong eternity bands are usually about $1K each (although you haven''t stated the metal), which means your stone was around $3500. For $3500 you could get a really well cut stone with a lab report close to the same size or larger purchased from a vendor with an upgrade policy.

What would you be trading your stone in for, better cut or larger size? You may need to have the head redone especially if you go larger.

Thanks so much for the responses. All of the metal is platinum. Ideally, I would like to go slightly larger, but yes the concern is that I already put in about $700 for the custom diamond head that I most likely won''t get any money back. I feel as if that money is wasted, so it''s deterring me from feeling comfortable for upgrading. I think we only paid about $2000 for the diamond center. I believe the two eternity shared prong bands were around $1,200.
