I''ve been in the market for an engagement ring and have shopped around. I''ve come to a conclusion on what I want to buy, but want to insure that I''m paying a fair price. Can someone critique this? (see below)

One other question: Are there specific cut proportions for different cuts of diamonds? If so, what are the ideal ranges for princess?

Price: 3,500 for shank, setting, and everything
GIA
Shape/Cutting Style : Square Modified Brilliant
Measuerments: 4.9*4.87*3.44
Weight: .73

Proportions:
Depth: 70.6%
Table: 74%
Girdle: Thick to Very Thick
Cutlet: None
Finish:
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Clarity: VS1
Characteristics: Feather, Cloud
Color: F

First, going by the cut grade chart GUIDELINES (not bible!), that stone is a decent cut, but def not "ideal" 1A... Those proposed guidelines can be found at gemappraisers.com. BUT Just b/c your stone doesn't fall in there doesn't mean it's not a beautiful stone! As for price- depends! For that cut quality, you could get the stone from an internet vendor for 2100-2500. You pay more by going to vendors that give you more services and good policies...so the price going to that type of vendor would be more but still 'reasonable'...The setting (which is the shank and head btw

price depends...are you getting white gold or plat?

do you have the crown info?

Also, it sounds like you've decided to buy the puppy! So don't sweat it!

I just wanted to reiterate that just b/c a stone isn't 1A by the numbers, doesn't mean it can't be beautiful! Case in point:

Thanks for the information. Unfortunatly, I don't have the crown data. I'm torn on gold, white gold or platinum. I'm leaning towards gold, but can't make a decision.

But I thought the price included the setting? There is a huge difference in price b/w plat and white gold. If white gold is included in the price and you're buying from an online vendor, it's about 900 too much in my opinion !

the debate is endless re gold and plat. However, when budget is a concern (when isn't it!) I'd rather put my money towards the stone not the setting...you can always change the setting!

I'm going to a local jewler has been recommended to me by a friend. Sorry I wasn't clear...the price was everything if I got gold. If I got a platinum shank, it would be a bit more.

Okay, so let's say that I'm ready to replace my engagement stone with something nicer (without a trade-in). I'd like to keep my setting but purchase a decent stone. I'm a newbie here and my husband is totally clueless. This is really my endeavor.

In looking at the posts for The Shane Co. I'm kind of at a loss for where to start. Who would mount this without my purchasing it from them, say if I found something on-line? How would you go about buying on-line? I would want to examine the stone with a loop...

Yeah.. you might want to read some of the PS feedback on Shane...

You can always get the stone shipped to a local appraiser and take a look - if you want to get it online. This is what return periods are for. And with the selection already based on a good load of info, the chances to get a seriously unpleasant piece are not worrisome.

It is not unusual to have either the seller of the stone or the appraiser recommend a jeweler.

For better or worse, a couple of e-mails can prove this workable or not with not much effort involved...
