What complete and utter idiocy. I''m surprised they didn''t come out and call it the Ostrich Law.

Yeah, and I get to travel to Utah on a regular basis. I have gotten in the habit of bringing my own wine - or stopping at a liquor store on the way to the hotel.

I went to Sundance for a reward trip with my husband two years ago. We had to "join" the "private club" there to drink at the bar. We had a dinner with wine pairings, and they were not allowed to leave more than one glass of wine in front of us at a time. This encouraged me to drink faster, as I was going to be darned if I''d let them take perfectly good wine away from me! I had fun positioning my glasses at odd angles so it was hard to tell whose glass it was, and I tried to keep one under the table at all times. Good job politicians! Make your tourists drunker than they would be outside of your state, and then make them not want to deal with your stupid laws on future trips!

And then our shopping trip to Park City stopped at the liquor store, and I swear the liquor store was like your grandma''s basement. It was old and musty with wood paneling and a refrigerator from the 50s. You had to go up to the counter and get the little old lady who worked there to pull down your items for you. And they had only a few choices of everything, and nothing top shelf.

Ridiculous!

It''s a little hard to believe that Utah is in America sometimes. This is so stupid I can''t even believe it.

Gotta love Utah.

Loved it enough anyway that I skied Park City every year for 13 seasons (until it became a bit too posh for me). The liquor law was terrible, but I managed to live with it fine. I remember a cocktail at dinner and then my meal (steak) came out so fast, I asked for my glass of wine and forgot that they wouldn''t give it to me since I had a half full cocktail still. So I either had to guzzle it down or toss the rest.

However, I guess it''s who ya know. I went skiing a couple of seasons by myself. Went to a bar on Main Street and made friends with the bartenders. It is hard to get a vodka martini in Utah because the pours are metered. But the bartender poured me extra (I am sure he was breaking the law) and I stayed after hours to hang out with the bartenders for a couple of nights and all bets were off then. They poured whatever I wanted.

Thank god I loved skiing enough to get my butt home without getting drunk so I could make it to the slopes the next day.

That is probably the stupidest idea I have ever read.

Not joking.

Not a darn thing..... Did you read the quote about how quickly children will learn to drink and then become binge drinkers?!? So, they can''t see the drinks being poured, but they can still see people drinking. What about the rest of the world? Are you going to blindfold your kids when they are anywhere outside of Utah? I hate when people try to make invalid arguments using flawed logic! (I was at the top of my class in Critical Thinking, plus, I have common sense!)

Ridiculous.

Thanks for sharing though. I go to Utah a lot for work so it''s nice to keep up with the liquor laws.

It''s totally flawed thinking. Giving alcohol the status of "forbidden fruit" directly leads to binge drinking. Allowing children to see moderate, responsible drinking and teaching them not to associate shame with that type of drinking promotes responsible choices.

If anyone''s going to Utah, remember to not drink the beer because it''s only around 3% alcohol. Last time I was there I had a big 20oz beer in the airport. Then I decided to have another one. At that point I had another 2 hours til my flight so I had one more. Three 20oz beers later and I was barely buzzed. It was at this point that I realized there was almost no alcohol in it

So I didn''t get drunk but I did have to run to the bathroom at least 5 times before my flight took off

Utah is ridiculous. Though the airport bartenders were willing to give 2 drinks at a time. The guy next to me got a shot of whiskey to enhance his low alcohol beer

I don''t understand this law, what is it trying to achieve?

I''m in Utah at the moment, have been for the last 2 weeks, and haven''t had any problem getting a drink, beer, wine, or a pretty strong margarita. We''ve gone into bars for a beer without eating a meal and haven''t been asked to pay a membership fee, and there is plenty of strong beer here. In fact right now I''m drinking a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale that''s 5.6%.

The only inconvenience has been having to go to a State Liquor Store to buy takeaway booze, there isn''t one on every corner.

In other Utah news, apparently Utah residents consume more online pornography than residents of any other state. Ha!

"Once these kids start drinking, I can tell you it’s hard to stop. They move quickly to binge drinking."

I so disagree with this statement from the article. My parents started letting me have watered down wine with special dinners when I was in my early teens. Totally demystified it for me, while other kids my age (especially those from STRICT no tolerance backgrounds) were secretly drinking whiskey instead of apple juice with their lunches. From my personal experience, the more you make a big deal about tabooing something, the more kids are gonna want to do it. This sounds like a great way to get a bunch of kids drinking, not the other way around. I barely drink even now, and I LIKE alcohol (as in the taste of some of it). My wildest 'binge' was when I was well over the legal age, and you know what??? Funny enough, since my mother had done a good job raising me, I never operated a car while drinking and made sure to do it in a 'safe' controlled environment. You can't legislate good parenting or morality. Stuff like this drives me bonkers.

Gypsy, I agree with you 100%. I was also allowed to have a very small glass of wine at special dinners starting in my early teens, and quickly became a wine snob. And I was sometimes allowed to have a sip or two of my dad''s beer, though he didn''t drink very often, and became a beer snob, too. So the crud they served at parties in high school and college held no allure for me, and I really had no interest in drinking to get drunk. I ALWAYS DD''d for my friends or was the one responsible for making sure everyone got home safely, because I was the only person I trusted enough.

When I was studying in England, it was amazing to see the difference between my American college friends back at home, and the English college kids I befriended there -- not that the English ones didn''t drink a lot, but they never got stupid or sick. Since the drinking age is lower and not enforced all that strictly, most of them had done whatever initial stupid stuff they were going to do when they were in high school and had their parents around. By the time they got to University, it was old hat -- they knew exactly what they were doing and had no need (or desire?) to push things. We went to the pub most nights, but mostly because it was a really fun social atmosphere, and nobody cared if you drank a soda or juice instead of alcohol because nobody was there for the sole purpose of getting drunk. It was a totally different attitude than at home, and definitely reflected the cultural attitudes toward alcohol.
