Hi All!
I was wondering if anyone has used an Heirloom diamond in a new setting? I adore my gma's wedding set, but after much consideration, i've come to realize that in order to get the ring fixed 100%, I would have to spend nearly the same budget as a new setting. However, i would like to still use the diamond as i love the idea of reusing diamonds from the family.

When you reused your heirloom diamond, did you have it (at the time) with the original setting? what happened to the setting, and is it (the setting) still useable?

How did an "older" cut sit with a newer style setting? Did it look funny or was is still beautiful as ever?

Has anyone been in a similar situation and used Good Old Gold, White Flash, or B&M stores? How about the warrenty on the new ring (details)?

Thank you so much everyone, i appreciate your help. I am currently thinking about getting a tacori setting or a custom designed setting (the ring in my avatar is the ring i am talking about).

There are many threads on this and many people who have done it. Usually you can get the old setting returned to you unscathed and set a gemstone or something else into it later.

You just need to make sure that the stone doesn't have any major chips or issues that could prevent resetting it.

As for style, it just depends on what you like. I think older cut diamonds can look gorgeous in the right modern setting, but they can also look "off". So choose the setting with your stone in mind IMO.

I recently had an heirloom diamond (an OEC) set into a modern setting, so I can offer a little advice.

The original setting is a big honkin'' man''s ring. It''s still in good condition and I plan to set a sapphire in it (if I can find one big enough that doesn''t cost a fortune). I''m not sure about the ability to reset any setting, but it can be done. I would let your jeweler know that you want to save the setting before they remove the stone so they don''t damage it.

I set my old cut into a x-prong setting with bead set stones on the shoulder. While it looks beautiful, there are days that I wish I had gone with an antique setting to match the stone better. One of the biggest things I notice is that the full cut sidestones look very different from the center stone. I would''ve loved to get single cuts, but it didn''t seem worth the hassle/money to source them. Since most modern settings (or reproductions of antiques) will have full cuts in the pave, this is something everyone deals with I guess. So while I do adore my ring and it looks gorgeous, I''m hoping to someday get another old cut stone and put it in an antique setting as a RHR so I can have the best of both worlds

I think a Tacori would be beautiful with an old stone, so you probably can''t go wrong there.

I used a local B&M to design my setting and set the stone and had absolutely no issues. They even remade it for me when I wasn''t happy with it! I think that the online vendors would also be a great choice.

Neatfreak mentioned that setting is a risk with a chipped stone, but my stone has a big ol'' girdle chip and made it through two resettings just fine (and apparently the man''s ring wasn''t it''s original home, so it has been set 3 times now with the chip and has had no issues). I would just talk to the jeweler first and make sure they don''t see any problems.

Good luck finding your dream ring! Though I have to add that I love the setting in your avatar. If I were you I''d try to get it fixed up and keep it and save the Tacori for a RHR. But whatever you do, you must post pictures when it''s done

Thank you for the advice!

I do love the setting that it is in now, so we''ll see what we wind up doing. I just have been in love with tacori since, oh, FOREVER :)

I will try to find another stone to put in the old setting as well :)

Hi jcarlylew!

I just reset an heriloom stone (OEC) from my fiance''s family into a new custom setting. I did try to keep the design antique in style since my stone is an OEC. It just seemed to make more sense and it turned out perfect! I actually just posted picutres in show me the ring if you haven''t seen it yet. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/he-asked-i-said-yes-my-3-52-oec-er-with-halo.93261/

If I hadn''t done this particular setting I would have probably make it a solitare so I could appreciate the old cut. They really do sparkle different than modern cuts. His family also had a 3 stone ring with an OEC in the middle with a transitional cut on one side and then a modern round on the other. I thought it looked kinda funny.... if I get that piece one day I would pull all the stones apart and do something different with them. My original heirloom stone was in a pendant and we aren''t going to do anything with it since the value of the setting was no minimal.

I am sure you would be fine putting the diamond into a new setting. Oh and I used a local jeweler.... mainly because I wanted to meet the person who was going to design my ring and I didn''t want to give up my stone to someone I didn''t trust. Good Luck!
