My BFF is pregnant with her first and she''s coming up to visit in 2 weeks and will have a shower up here with friends and family. I''m sure she would love a diaper cake and similar things, but I don''t want her to worry about trying to get that kind of stuff onto the plane.

I''m wondering what would be some useful gifts to get her.

I''m really looking forward to this, but I guess I want to make this really special for her since her husband is deployed right now and I know she wishes she could be up here.
I also plan on knitting the baby a blanket. I''m learning how to knit, so hopefully this will turn out well!

I think a handmade gift and a giftcard would be a fabulous combination. Nothing a new mom can use more than a gift card to Target or Babies R Us.

I was going to post the same thing as neatfreak. I know many women who have said that gift cards were extremely wonderful gifts after having their babies, and especially if she won''t be able to take a whole bunch of gifts on the plane home with her. Does she have a registry? Maybe that could help you find out what she still needs. Although I have to say I LOVE handmade blankets, I still have mine from when I was born and it is so very special to me.

Thritto! Have a gift card shower so she doesn''t have to lug everything home with her. My friend lives in MA and had a shower in FL. Some generous person there bought them their stroller off the registry. Instead of shipping it or trying to get it on the plane (both of which would have been quite costly), they took it to the store and returned it for credit. Then they went home and bought it with the credit they received. Getting a GC with a note saying "this is for such and such" would have saved them a lot of hassle. You can also ship things to their house right from the registry if that''s easier, but then she wouldn''t have anything to open at the shower.

This is a really good idea! Sounds perfect.

I went to a friend's shower who was in a similar situation. The hosts asked us to have the registry item we bought delivered to my friend's address but to bring a photo of the item, either wrapped in a box or envelope, for the guest of honor to have something to open.

I love the idea of a homemade blanket and gift card, though.
