I'm considering purchasing used a setting for a diamond I already own. The setting previously held a stone almost the exact same size, and the ring will be resized only slightly.

I do intend to get the diamond insured before having it set locally.

Are there any specific questions or concerns I should have before purchasing the setting? Should I get a jeweler on board first?

Lastly, how easy/costly do you guess it would be to polish and maybe engrave the inside (not even sure if engraving is possible on a made ring). Would polishing wipe out any/all markings on the inside? The setting is PT 900.

Thanks!

The ring will be polished after resizing. Polishing will not wipe out any marks on the interior. I have no idea on the cost for engraving but probably not expensive.

If the ring previously held a stone almost the exact same size, there shouldn't be a problem.

You can engrave anything. There are different types of engraving. Some are better than others... deeper. Do you research.

Pre-owned settings can be a great value.

You ONLY want to work with places with an in house bench, not places that send out their work.

Make sure you do your research. Oh and some places use less metal than they should with re-sizing. I would ask to see current projects for sizing they've completed (they usually have a cabinet of them).

Awesome. Thank you!

If you have concerns about things like engraving on the inside etc. be sure you talk to the jeweler about these concerns. I once had to add sizing balls to a ring - and they were placed right over the maker's mark. Not what I intended. Another time I had a figural ring re-shanked, and the jeweler 1) didn't match the gold color well, so there's a notable discrepancy between the top and the bottom of the ring, and 2) gave the whole piece such an aggressive polish that I lost some of the detailing on the ring. Both of these were very reputable jewelers. So be sure to be explicit about your expectations when you talk to the jeweler.

I won't deal with any of my local jewelers for repairs anymore, except Bruno / Diamonds by the Waterfall. The others did good work at first, then on subsequent jobs they got sloppy and things just weren't done to Pricescope standards (rings left out of round, stone scratched, not enough metal used for resizing, cracked the shank on one ring, etc.) I have had work done by Good Old Gold and Brian Gavin when I purchased from them. I'd also not hesitate to have repairs or restoration work done by Wink of HighPerformanceDiamonds. I'm in a small town and don't have the options that people in larger cities may have.

I am guessing this is a modern setting? If so, really easy to resize, set, polish and engrave something inside. Usually no more than $150. I have done this sooooo many times (minus the engraving inside) with a range of vendors.
