Does anybody know if there is a way to verify if a diamond is new or used? I''m wondering, if somebody traded in their diamond for a new one, does the store then only sell that diamond as used, or do they get it regraded and sell it as new? Do retailers have to disclose if a diamond is used or new?

If you do a search this topic has come up several times.

Basically, there is no such thing as a "new" diamond. They are thousands of years old to begin with and then, yes, once cut, they are recycled. If they weren''t then vendors upgrade policies wouldn''t be possible.

A search will get you more information and hopefully answer any questions you have.

In horror, a while back I realized this very thing!

The diamond has to be in excellent shape, etc. to go back in the pool but yep
you could be wearing the old stone of a serial killer. Do you believe in good/bad juju?

There''s really no such thing as a new/old or used diamond because a repolishing and/or new grading report can change that image to "brand new" in no time ...most rough diamonds were formed between several 100M and 2B years ago.

In general, what happens after the rough is mined is political/economic football, and for the average gem diamond, once you find a polished one you like there is probably no way you will know/or can find out much about the history of your stone...the exceptions would be a few cases of brand names and some of the rough from countries like Canada, where providing a stone''s history is used as a marketing tool.
