''Used'' Diamonds?

Long time lurker here - thank god I discovered this site!
Please be gentle with my first question....

This may have already been discussed before.
What do folks think about buying diamond stud earrings from an individual (aka used)?

I don''t begrudge a retailer or dealer needing to buy at current prices and making a living with a little profit. At the same time, if an individual wants to sell his/her diamonds, it seems that I can get a better price.

Any experiences here (good or bad)?
What is a reasonable fee to pay a B&M retailer for a basic appraisal (color, clarity)?

In general, any thoughts?

I'd have no problem buying used.
In fact "new" diamonds may be previously owned.
When people divorce or die they don't throw the gal's diamonds away.

Anyway I'd take them to an appraiser not a B&M seller who may be seen as having a conflict of interest - especially if they are of high value.

If you''re buying second hand directly from a previous owner, I''d say stick to about 50% of retail. This mean know what they''re offering, and know what the going rate is for that product.

Also, make sure the sale is contingent on an independent (not a resaler or someone with a vested interest in sales of diamond earrings) confirms the represented color, clarity, and cut of the stones.

I love to go to pawn shops and estate sales, or look in Craigslist.

Confession time: most of my diamonds are second hand: my pendant, ring (small OMC, around 0.25cts) and the earrings. Generally, I pay around 50% of retail, but the earring were a real bargain.

I got my ring at an auction, my pendant from DiamondBistro (from someone I recognized as a poster here) and my earrings were from a vintage shop.
