It depends on your actions...making an out of state purchase does not absolve you from liability for paying your state''s sales tax (assuming it has one) on that purchase ...still on the honor system in a lot of places
I don't know how tight CA is on keeping track of out of state purchases. I do know, however, that one of my good friends bought his wife's engagement ring in TX and had it shipped to MS. He never claimed it with the tax commision in MS, so he avoided all sales taxes. Although it is technically illegal, many people go this route. I suggest asking around and trying to find some of your friends that have had experience with such things in the state of CA.
For the record -- state tax here in TX is in the 8-9% range as well, so you won't save much if you come here...
