Hi Guys, just thought I would give you some closure on my 4 carat princess ring that I was going to get reset. Well, an odd set of circumstances put a halt to that plan. Weeks went by and no word from my jeweller. So I pop in unannounced and he would not show me my diamond or the ring in progress/ wax etc. Basically told me to go and wait for phone call. So I rang the next day and explained that this was not something that I was going to wait indefinately for as my h. did not know of these plans and I didnt feel comfortable leaving my ring somewhere for so long. For me the time and the not being allowed to see my ring were red flags. The red flag was their attitude and manner towards me more than the time factor.

So anyway, sure enough, when I finally got to see the progress it was very disappointing. I think the fatal error was trying to use an existing mount and modify it for a 4 carat. They had to really change the integrity of the innitial design, open up the band to accomodate a too big stone, change the proportions of what would have worked on a 1 carat stone. And the prongs were a disaster. The diamond was sitting so high up it was like a joke. Of course someone thoght I wanted it set as high as possible even though it was written in the notes`to be set low as possible`. And btw, how many people want the diamond set high as possible....because thats pretty high I can tell you, and it doesnt look great!!!

So now the ring feels uncomfortable because they had to cut it and move the side diamonds more around to the back, it looks bulky and oldfashioned and the prong/ head design is not blending with the band, plus my diamond is about 2 feet tall!!!! Trainwreck!!! So, now that Im older and wiser, I know when to cut my losses and I pointed out everything that was wrong and asked them to reset my diamond back. So out I walked with my old ring, which didnt look so bad compared to what was being made.

Now, the exciting part. My ultrasonic cleamer has brought my ring to life. It practically spits out fire balls and is like a permanent disco with pin prick glitter all over the surface of the ring. The basic shape and edge of the ring almost become irrelivent with the amount of sparkle that moves across the ring from every angle. The rb halo is finally doing what I had envisioned it would do and the princess also seems to hold its own.

I play with my toy about 10 times a day, and it really has moved my ring into looking like it in a very high quality class. Whereas I got compliments before even I cant take my eyes off it now!!! FWIW, it did not look so alive before I got the machine. It actually looks like the cut has to be good to be so scintilating and firey. It is like an icy white stone with rainbow holigraphic glitter all over it!!!!

So for now, I have the remodling $ to put towards another project!!!!

Sorry about your situation, but glad it all seemed to work out.

Did you just recently get the US cleaner? I''m a little confused there.

Also, your ring sounds lovely, do you have pics posted somewhere?

What US do you have sharon?

Yes, I only recently got the us cleaning machine. It works like a charm, like magic. It has really made my ring into a different ring due to the diamonds always being clean.

Before the us machine my ring looked big but sort of dull. The setting seemed to stand out more than the diamonds. Now you cant even see any metal for all the sparkle, and I am seeing fire when I didnt really before. It is not a well cut diamond and it doesnt have a top
8.gif
, but it has become a bright scintilating surface of fire and sparkle now that it is clean!!! Even my dh is surprised at how well this diamond that had such poor specs on paper looks irl. He picked it out by using his eyes as he is in the jewellery trade, and from his point of view it was a great looking diamond for the price, and it was very white and bright from the beginning. It just didnt sparkle until I gave it a bath in the us!!!!!

You can search my name for pictures. They are of the ring pre us. and it didnt look as good then.

I think due to the size and shape it cant handle being dirty and stops functioning!!!!! Perhaps a better cut diamond performs even when slightly dirty. But the us has evened the playing field imo!!!!

To be honest I have never seen anyones diamond sparkle like mine does. And I know its because most people dont know about cleaning their rings more than that they dont have well cut diamonds. I am sure many people I know have the best that money can buy, but they dont know about cleaning them....so mine comes out looking much better!!!!
9.gif
even thogh in reality its not!!!! Either that or Im seeing things and have become delusional.

I will try to take photos to show you the new look Im seeing.

My machine is a cody brand one. And I like to put warm water with all sorts of additives. I experiment alot. Today I sprayed some shower sparkle cleaner into the water bath and me ring almost jumped up and punched me in the eye with its sparkle factor. Other times I put amonia, or some detergent, or some dishwasher liquid.

A friend came over and she always wears this frozen spit brown crappy diamond around her neck. I put it in and it came out a white (tiny bit) firey diamond.....it looked very pretty. It hasnt looked like a diamond for years and she practically cried with happiness! I threw in her cz earrings and they came out looking like ACA diamonds!!!! Very nice!!! And finally, I put in my crappy as anything diamond studs and even they came out looking all sparkely. Im telling you that half the problem with diamonds is that they are not kept clean!!!! Its like a car, no use having a BMW if its so filthy you cant see the paint or through the windows!!! Thats what most people do with their rings just wear them dirty, or clean them ineffectively.

Sharon thats awesome :) sucks about the reset bodge up but fantastic news that you feel in love with your ring :).

I really want a US I so have to get me one :)

It was quite a cheap investment!!!! I bought the first 2 for $65 each including delivery. Then I bought a 3rd one from the same dealer but through ebay. I played the ebay game like a pro, bidding and waiting and trying again, put hours into i, days and nights really.....and ended up buying one for $63 including delivery.

Yay for the US cleaner! I love mine as well, best investment ever!

I need an US too! I am too nervous to put my pave in there, but my new earrings need to be in tip top sparkly shape!

Sharon101 and Diamond*Dana,
Where did you get your US? I searched Cody but could only find ones that costed 165. and 185.

CWJ: Check out Sharper Image, $90. Works like a charm.

ME TOO ME TOO!!!

I''m gonna plug mine in right now and give everything a bath!!

thanks for the reminder

Glad you''ve found a new love for your ring! A thorough cleaning really does make a difference.

I''m surprised nobody''s mentioned this yet but...Did you get your US machine before the remodel, or afterwards? I ask only because if you were cleaning your ring before the US, it shouldn''t be that huge a difference that it looks like a completely new stone. Which leads me to ask if this transformation has occurred after you got the ring re set/and back again from that jeweler. If so, I''d be inclined to run over to my local independent appraiser just to be sure it''s the same stone, yes? He seemed a bid shady in how he handled your job so I would want to be sure that''s my original stone, you know? I''m glad you finally really like your ring though!

Surfgirl, I doubt a fellow jeweller who knows my whole family is going to swap out my diamond that is impossible to replicate because of its cut and very visible markings. I am also not born yesterday. I was there while my stone was set in the shop. My diamond has a mark that you can see from the bottem and its very distinctive!!! LOL

Fwiw, this jeweller is also very well known in my community and has done my Mums , MIL, and Sils rings. They all have gorgeous settings . He lately did one for the wife of one of the top 100 wealthiest people under 40 in Aust. and it was very beautiful with no expense spared. So my story was just a bad luck insident. He actually rang me personally to appologise, and I wont get into his personal reasons that involved family issues, but he was very sorry.

So, my independant appraiser is my husband. And everywhere I go I get stopped about this ring since I started cleaning it in the us. Even at a restuarant today the waiter couldnt stop comenting on how amazing it looks.

So I really do think that the us is doing a wonderful job and the diamond looks better than before....but its definately the same diamond!!!!!

Sharon101-I am glad you love your US cleaner, I just posted about how it works great, I just never take it out to use

I actually keep mine permanently out in the bathroom so its very handy for me to pop it in!!!! If I kept it in a cupboard or other stored away place it would probably never get used either!!!!

And yes Im sure SG was trying to be helpful by suggesting that rather than my us machine really working like Im telling the story, it just might be that it was really only working because my diamond had been switched to something else and I should get it appraised.
20.gif
. You have to think about how stupid that sinareo would make me, let alone the odds of my jeweller having a fake stone that looked and fit the exact size of my stone and whether he would be willing to ruin his reputation over my flawed diamond!!!!!!!!

Sharon, I have read a lot of surf''s posts since she came here, and I "think" I know her fairly well. I too do believe she was being honest in her belief that the US wouldn''t make that much difference.
2.gif

And surf, I clean my ring every day, take it off to cook, shower, clean, etc., in other words, it doesn''t get that dirty to begin with. But I simply can''t get it to look like I can with the US, seriously. And in a stone that is not cut as well, as Sharon has pointed out about her own stone, keeping it scrupulously clean can make a huge difference.
28.gif

Ok, not to harp on a point....but the `whole` of my ring sparkles and scintilates thus obscuring the finer details of the design. The metal almost becomes invisible. Its not just the main diamond that is super sparkly, but the whole ring!!!!

And I do think my diamonds cut makes it prone to looking dull and foggy. The super large table with a low crown height seems to attract dirt and totally block the light going through the diamond. But, when the top of the diamond is us cleaned, it is like a light show.

Before having my us machine my ring must have been constantly dirty despite my attempts in cleaning it.

I have also noticed that when a diamond is wet it looks amazing. My diamond looks similar when it has been in the us as when it is wet!!!!

Sharon101- Thats a good idea, wish I could but I am neurotic and have almost nothing on the counters...perhaps I need to make an exception :)

Soldsmart is sold out. Sharper image web site said sold out. I heard they were going out of business. Maybe just rumors or just some of the stores.
Here is a company that has a lot of models on ebay. If the link doesn't work the company's name is The Shining Image.

Congrats on loving your original ring. I''m sorry to hear the new setting didn''t work out, but glad to hear you are still in love with your ring! I should really finally look into buying an ultrasonic... I''ve been a pser too long to not own one yet!

Thanks to everyone who said congrates!!!!

I think that all the above us machines would all do the same job. I believe that one manufactorer makes them all and they have different names but look the same!!!!! Once I looked into it that is what I learnt anyway!!!! As long as the specs are the same, chances are it will do the same job. Unfortunately here in Aust. the ones on ebay selling for $20 or so do not ship to Aust. Also, its not something that jewellery shops encourage you to know about or buy for home use!!!!! Infact, when ever Ive asked a jewellery shop about the cleaning machines they say yes we carry them.....then they give me a container with a liquid inside that you dip your ring into!!!!!

If the Aussies cant find a cody there is the Australian Jewellery associasion that sells one but its a bit more....something like $85- $90??? Im sure its the cody though but more expensive. Also, with the site I mentioned, you can click on the part that will get back to you when they get more stock. Im sure they will restock as its such a good seller.

be sure to buy a US with S/S tank.

When I first got my ering from an online vendor, I went to a local appraiser to get it checked out. I asked him about ultrasonics and he took me down to Stuller (conveniently located in the same building) and I got the L&R PC 3 Ultrasonic. It''s really my favorite ''toy'' and its been a few years. I clean everything except my emeralds in it (and anyone who comes over gets a ring cleaning too). It has made me obsessed with clean jewelry!

Anyone know of an US cleaner that uses 220V/50Hz? I''m finding tons of ones for the United States, but nothing for Europe. UK or Continental EU, all the same to me, as all I need to do is slap a plug adapter on it if it''s UK. Sure, you can get US cleaners in Germany, but like many other common objects in the US, there is only a highly-engineered, highly-priced equivalent available in Germany.
