URGENT!!! PLEASE HELP .... Tiffany & Co Engagement Ring

Hi there,

I have recently found a pre owned Tiffany & Co 18kt yellow gold and platinum clasis solitaire ring on Ebay and I would like to ask if £2000 (USD$ 3680) is reasonable for the 0.68cts, H colour, VS1. It was purchased in Oct 2004 and the condition is excellent, comes complete with velvet presentation box, Tiffany & Co. green box, book and also the Tiffany & Co. Diamond Certificate presented in leather folder. I need to make a decision very soon whether to grab it or not, I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out

I think this is a personal decision you have to make. For that money, you can get a bigger diamond and potentially better quality H&A from one of the online vendors (try searching on www.goodoldgold.com). However, TCO carries a premium and you have to determine what the brand name is worth to you and your future finance. I am not sure what the going rate is for a diamond with those specs from TCO. I suggest you stop by your local TCO or call them and get a price quote.

I ditto what Charmypoo says. A diamond purchase is substantial and intricate and I would not let a "possible deal of the century on Ebay" be the decision maker. If it is not what it''s advertised or not what you expected, you are stuck with it unless there is a return policy. Ebay is great for certain things like clothes or toys, things that you can put an exact retail price on. You can bid knowing that at some point it is no longer a deal. Because diamond prices vary so, you will not know whether or not you got a bargain or simply overpaid. Better to be safe than sorry.

Thank u very much for your response. I''m actually meeting the owner of the ring and do a cash on delivery. She originally set £2500 as minimum price to let go but i managed to convince her to bring it down to £2000. There''s another guy from Spain offering £2700 but of course she would prefer to make arrangements with someone from UK. I understand that I could get a bigger and nicer diamond from somewhere else but i think my gf would prefer a tiffany and anything bigger than 0.70cts wouldnt suit her petite size well. I just wanna know if the price is reasonable for 0.68cts, H colour, VS1. Thanx again!

If you can get a copy of the cert or get the stats on the diamond, we can plug it into the diamond search to see the prices of comparable diamonds. There is not enough information given to give you an answer.

Is there a Tiffany''s near you where the 2 of you can meet so that you can have the store verify the documents? Or better yet, stop by a Tiffs to see what they quote you for a similar diamond.
 
I''ve plugged in what little information that you have and left the rest in pre-set mode and got ranges from $1959 to $3068 for diamonds .65 to .70 ct. There was no .68 offered. So if she''s willing to sell it for L2000 ($3680 US), than my opinion is that it''s not a good deal even it there is a premium on the Tiffany name. However, Tiffany pieces may be worth a lot more in the UK than they do in the US, the way Levis are worth more in Japan than in the US.
 
No freakin way would I pay in cash for something off ebay - you have no buyer protection at all. Insist on using a credit card or Paypal or something traceable with protection.

You have no way of knowing if it''s a fake or not, and the fact that you talk about the ''green box'' is a worry - a Tiffany''s jewellery box is one of the most famous and recognisable boxes in the world and it''s BLUE.
 
I agree with honey-please do not pay cash for it as you really do have no comeback. If you are meeting up with her in person, then meet at a Tiffany store where they can verify the ring''s authenticity. If she won''t agree to that, I''d have serious doubts. Personally I wouldn''t buy a Tiffany ring off Ebay-go on www.signedpieces.com. Have you rang a tiffany store yourself to see what price they would sell a ring like that for?
 
Where are you and the seller meeting? Is it at a T&CO store? Be sure it is so you can verify that the ring you''re buying is authentic before handing over any money! Be careful that the seller isn''t trying to push you into a quick saying another person (from spain) is interested. . . watch out for scams.

If she was a legitimate buyer she'd want to protect herself by getting the money paid into her account thro paypal and a £500 saving to pay cash is is a big drop from what she wants. If she can secure £2700 and get the protection any sane person would go for the Spanish buyer, but even that sounds dodgy. Nah, this doesn't seem right.

Secondly, you could buy a much better diamond for the same price elsewhere which is legitimate. I'm not saying you can't get good deals on Ebay but they are hard to find and if you are willing to pay up to £2.5k for a ring, then you should really do your research. I'm sure your girlfriend would rather have a beautiful diamond ring that a fake Tiffany & Co.

You've come on to PS for help, so listen to the advice it will work out to your advantage in the end. I'm in the UK and my diamond band and earings are from the US and I wouldn't buy in the UK anymore, you get better quality and value for your money from the US.

Look at the pricescope vendors and do your research.

It never fails to amaze me how people seem to lose their heads when T&Co is involved !
You don't have to listen to us, please just do a search here on Ebay and start to read all the people who have been duped. Why in the world are you agreeing to pay in cash??

I''m in the UK too and have been scammed on Ebay by "genuine Tiffany". Please make sure you meet the seller at a jewellers who has agreed to, at the very minimum, test the diamond. I''ve got to say that I think it''s incredibly over-priced, even considering the Tiffany name premium.

If you do get it, please pay by Paypal at the very least but check how much protection you have - some auctions only offer £500.

Ditto what everyone else says. Unless you can meet at Tiffany''s or an independent appraiser of YOUR CHOICE to verify that the ring really is an authentic Tiffany ring AND the diamond is what she claims, don''t do it...

You should also check with your girl to see if she is ok with a second hand ring.

I know I have been through a lot of stress buying purses off ebay. I am always doubting if I got an authentic purse. Luckily, I haven''t been burned yet but I could easily have.
 
I live in the uk and it doesn''t sound like a good idea and it doesn''t sound like it is good value for rmoney. Try whiteflash and GOG. Even with the import tax you would get a much nicer rock for your money!

I agree that you should avoid ebay for such an important purchase. You could be throwing your money away.

I live in the UK and have bought from Whiteflash a few times. They are definitely reputable.

If the OP insisted on meeting at a T&CO store to verify the ring, I would bet just about anything that the seller would be a no-show....
 
Please, please Jerry, consider our advice. Ebay is not the place for diamonds, especially Tiffany''s. If it was genuine, she would have no problems unloading it at a jewelry shop that specializes in estate & signed pieces. I was trying to give you the benefit of the doubt by running the numbers to see if it was a deal simply because you sound so dead set on buying it. But my gut feeling is that is a scam. If she will not take it to Tiffany''s for verification, run, don''t walk away from the deal. I don''t think that your future fiance wants to start her engagement off with you suffering a bad financial loss. Papers can be copied and the box is blue, not green. Look at the number of fake Louis Vuitton purses out for sale...with papers, etc. Don''t be a victim.

Sorry if I sound like I''m preaching. I just hate to see you get hurt.
 
I agree with everyone. I think there is a 100% chance you are being scammed. Nobody is going to leave extra money on the table just so they can deal with someone from the UK vs. Spain.

Im currently looking at WhiteFlash, thank god i found pricescope. I know Hearts&Arrow got the best sparkle! How long does it take for them to fit the diamond onto the ring ? does anyone know how their presentation box looks like ? and anyone got a picture of the ring bought from WF? thank you guys very very much!

Good call on going the custom route--you won''t regret it! I''m definitely not a diamond expert, but if there''s one thing I''ve learned on PS it''s that cut is the most important of the "C''s" you can do a simple search on here for "whiteflash" and you''ll get tons of examples of rings that have been made by them. They have a very good reputation on here and there are many very happy ladies wearing their creations. I think the timeframe really depends on what you''re looking for--whether it''s one of their more standard stock-type pieces or a completely custom design dreamt up entirely by you.
