Upgrading my diamond? How does one do this?

We bought a diamond from GOG last year for my engagement ring. We decided not to get married and he let me keep the ring.

Since I have considered selling it but have heard from other friends who are in the same situation as I, that they cant get anywhere close to what they paid for the ring.

A friend suggested that I dont sell it but instead up grade it when I decide to get engaged again. I had forgotten about this option.

I've already written to GOG but as it is Sunday, I figured I'd see if I could get any feedback from here as well.

What I want to know is if I have to get the same shape diamond as I did before or could I get something totally different.

What I was considering now is either an Asscher diamond or a sapphire center stone with either pear or the triangle (sorry cant recall the correct term) for side stones.

How does upgrading my diamond word with this. I believe GOG has a buy back option as well.

I would just like to get something totally different than what I had before for personal reasons.

At any time you can trade in the diamond you purchased from Good Old Gold and get exactly what you paid (less the cost of shipping) toward a diamond of at least a $500.greater value than your past purchase. Once you trade up for another diamond, there are no refunds. You can only trade up again. The diamond cannot be chipped, burned or altered in any way different than how you received it from us in order for us to honor your refund or upgrade. If your trade-in does require a minor re-polishing to bring it back to it's original condition, only the cost of the re-polishing, a new certification and any loss of points on the diamond from the re-polishing would be deducted.

Buy back policy:

Our buy back policy pertains to Round Hearts & Arrows, diamonds that have been purchased from Good Old Gold.
We at Good Old Gold will buy back the diamond you bought from us for 25% less than what you paid for it. This is an incredible policy because think about it. ANYWHERE YOU BUY A DIAMOND, once they have your cash, that's it. NO MONEY BACK. Another great thing about this policy is if you've ever spoken to someone who's tried to pawn or sell their engagement ring back to a jewelry store or second hand dealer the average return (and this is a hard reality) IS ANYWHERE FROM 20-30% OF WHAT THEY ACTUALLY PAID FOR THE RING. This gets really bad for those of you who purchased from high end retailers or compartment stores or malls. Then of course there's always that last option of you selling it in the paper. You'll get the most for it that way should you ever be in that predicament. HOPEFULLY YOU WON'T. The diamond cannot be chipped, burned or altered in any way different than how you received it from us in order for us to honor your refund or upgrade.

Sounds like as long as you buy a diamond that is more than $500 over the price you guys purchased your current stone, then you can buy any shape diamond.

Getting side tracked happens fairly often with me when I have the price scope website up as well and all their sparklies are calling my name.

That''s very generous of your ex-fiancee to let you keep the ring. If I were your new fiancee, I wouldn''t feel comfortable letting your ex partially finance your new engagement ring via an upgrade. That should be all his endeavor. If you want to use it to put towards a ring that you can wear as a right hand ring or towards a pair of earrings or another piece of non-marriage related jewelry then that would be better IMO. Since you have no hurry for the money, you may be able to sell the ring yourself for close to what your ex paid and then use the cash for whatever you choose.

Dont jump to conclusions please. I guess it would be very generous of my ex to let me have the diamond IF I had not paid about $6000 towards it already. I didnt think that was necessary to add but since you brought it up, I wanted to clarify.

Secondly, I have already tried to sell it but have not come close to even what I paid for it so thats why I was going to upgrade it. It would be a waste of money to not do so.

I really dont feel it should be all of my new fiance's endeavor since I helped my first fiance pay for it. I considered it part of a debt that we incurred together so why not chip in. I just happened to pay more than he did in the end. Thats why I dont have any problems with upgrading it for my next e ring since I paid the majority of it anyways.

You seem rather annoyed-- that wasn't my intent. Pardon me if I jumped to a conclusion, but I gave an opinion based on your original post. You failed to mention that you paid for most of your own engagement ring if you put $6000 towards it.

Deputy, your diamond looks great from the pictures and description. I think GOG has a great trade-up policy and I think it would be a great idea for you and your fiance to use it towards your e-ring! Good luck with everything

I wasnt annoyed, I just didnt see how what I did with the ring or who paid more was relevant to my original post. I was asking about thr trade up and buy back policies for my next e ring.

Whether I use the money from the original ring for my next ring or for my wedding or honeymoon or whatever, its still just money regardless of who paid for it. The only piece of jewelry I''d ever own that would cost as much as that stone did would be an e-ring.

And I even went to GOGs website and they confirmed what I had experienced when trying to find a buyer, that you only get about 25%-30% of what you paid for it. That''s why it seems more practical to me to use that stone to get a nicer e-ring next time.

Although technically if you wanted $$$ and not to upgrade, they would pay you 75% of your purchase price.

But if you guys are going to be needing a e-ring stone soon, you're better off using 100% of your stone's purchase price towards another stone compared to 75% which another vendor

I would definately use the buy back program if I really needed the money, since it''s much more than what you could get anywhere else.

But I hate to lose money so I think I''ll just hold onto it for now and when the time comes, I''ll just upgrade it.

Im thinking of getting a bigger center stone (not too much bigger though) and two sapphire pear side stones. I like the Dvatche rings and they have one with this option.

But we''ll see, one can never tell. I just get so excited looking at everyone''s gorgeous rings and it gives me soooo many ideas for what I really want next time.
