Hi there.
I'm considering either buying a diamond from a company with an upgrade policy, and having it set with the same company....
or...
buying the diamond, and having it set locally.

Are there any 'issues' I should be aware of?
If I go with the local jeweller for the setting, guess I should consider insuring the diamond prior to having it set?

If I ever go for an upgrade

(not that I'm planning on any upgrade right now...), will the diamond vendor reset my diamond, even though I didn't buy the setting from them originally?

Thanks for any advice..

Hi Lara,
you''re in oz, right?
I can answer your query, as I just went through exactly the same decisions and processes.
To my knowledge (and I looked far and wide), there is NO insurance currently in Australia that will cover a loose stone while its being set by a jeweller.
Plus, as you likely already know, no jeweller will accept liabililty to set a diamond you did not purchase through them.
I know, bad news huh? So that kind of leaves us Aussie''s in a tougher position - but then again, you can look at it like it narrows down your choices too.

I eventually bought my diamond from GOG, and had it set into a ring made at WF. And yes, without insurance

everything turned out perfectly, but I wouldn''t advise this as a standard route.
I''d just like to say that I''m sure that if I had been in NY I easily could''ve found a setting at GOG that fit my tastes and budget, but it just ended up I really wanted the WF one.

As far as your upgrade question, it would be best to ask your vendor, but from what I garnered talking to GOG, your choice of setting will not affect that kind of thing.

Thanks arjuna!
I''m surprised about the insurance thing... I mean, people must take loose diamonds to jewellers to set all the time, right?
