I have a 3 stone ring I am looking to upgrade. all 3 stones are princess cut. Center stone: 1.23 ct, G color, VS1. Side stones: .45 ct, VS1, H color. I am looking at a 2.14 ct round brilliant. SI2, Color grade: H, Measurements: 8.25 - 8.23 x 5.19 mm, total depth: 63%, table width: 55%, Crown height: 16%, Pavilion depth: 44%, polish and symmetry: very good, girdle thickness: med, faceted, culet: none, moderate blue fluorescence. EGL cert states Tolkowsky Ideal Cut. My questions are twofold: First as to the quality of the new stone I am considering, and its fair value, Second, my trade in value that would be reasonable.

Does the jeweler who sold the existing three-stone ring take it back for trade-in ? Otherwise, trade-in might not happen... and selling is a whole different business.

I can't really help with prices beyond what the database on top of this page offers - with several competing sellers listing and hundreds of diamonds, it is not very hard to reach a ballpark. Both for the trade-in and the new diamond. Hope that will help a bit if it has not already.

For example, 2 carat H/Si2 EGL grades rounds get listed prices between 10k and 15k. Cut and effective clarity (how clean they appear in person) should account for the differences. However, such a wide range is not unusual for any color&clarity&weight range. EGL graded diamonds come at a discount compared to GIA graded ones.

There's another thing... What EGL calls "ideal cut" is quite a wide range and those proportions may or may not deliver top brilliance (as the "Tolkowsky cut" name suggests). In this particular case they do not sound very promissing (by the Cut Adviser score). Now, that is no follproof tool and this one stone can be one of the lucky exceptions. But if there is a hefty premium for the "ideal cut" you might want to investigate just how ideal that is.

Have you seen this diamond ?

Just IMO, of course.

Yes the jeweler is accepting the trade (He originally sold the ring to me). What is your feeling on the quality of the new stone?

just added some lines to the previous post about this...

I could not say those numbers tell allot, but the message does not sound terribly optimistic. At least not from the point of view of the HCA - and one can argue that this a tool made to tell degrees of perfection apart and it may be too critical. Honestly, with this warning at had I would look twice into it.

Does this stone look clean ? SI2 graded by EGL does not rise expectations very high.

I have seen the stone, it is quite beautiful. The jeweler is asking for $8800 difference plus my ring. My ring should value about 6K maybe more or less
