Hi!

I’m hoping for some advice. I currently have a three stone engagement ring which I love, but we’re now in a position to upgrade the stone size. I’m looking at a 2.3-4 centre with .4-5 sides. I currently have the trois brilliant setting but wondering if the thicker three stone setting would better accommodate the bigger diamonds?

I’m considering this diamond:

Many thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for the quick replies!

The budget for the centre stone is up to $30,000.
My current ring is H and I think it looks much brighter next to the I I tried on. I would also prefer a VS2.

I am planning on getting 0.5-0.6ct sides and so I think max 2.5ct centre.

I have had a look at this one (https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3947617.htm) but am a little worried about the marks at 2'oclock and 7'oclock. Would they be visible with the naked eye? It says "eye-clean".

Hi Kate and welcome!

What a lovely project! The only way to be sure whether a diamond is eye clean to your preferences is to ask the vendor to discuss the stone and your expectations, usually VS clarity grades will be eye clean face up, but it's always best to talk to the vendor. If for example you want a diamond that's eye clean from all angles and viewing distances, in all lighting conditions, the vendor will need to evaluate the diamond for you. However, this stone is definitely worth investigating, it looks beautiful!

How big is your current center stone?

The current centre stone is 1.26ct and the sides .25ct each. From a balance perspective I think a 2.4-2.5ct with 0.5ct looks best from some of the photos online in this forum.

For this stone (https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3947617.htm) am I being ridiculous on those markets at the 2o'clock and 7'olock? They need seem quite bad in the photo.

Thanks for all the help. Kate

Kate, you're looking at something that's hugely inflated with the photo, in reality, the only way to check whether a stone is eye clean enough to suit you is to ask the vendor as they're the only ones who can tell you for sure whether it will meet your expectations or not. Give them a call, they're lovely people and there's no pressure to buy! VS2 ' should' be eye clean in this size but it's always prudent to check to be sure.

Yes, I would definitely contact Whiteflash. They are wonderful and they will walk you through step by step of any stone!

As usual @Lorelei is correct. The images you see are zoomed in, probably around the 20x mark so IMO it would be more odd if you didn't see the imperfections at that level of magnification.

That said, I can understand the issue of a "mind clean" stone. Looking at the certs, my VS2 I chose seems to be much cleaner than some that I've seen posted. Of course my stone is only 1 carat and much, much less than your upgrade budget.

I'm not judging and saying they are bad choices but I don't like that stuff either -- especially when it's on the table area. I might even add that with a VS2 I like the stone be eye clean within 6" from the top and sides. FYI, WF's standard definition of eye clean is 10" from top only. If you tell them you expect more like I mentioned they will adjust their reviews when they look on your behalf.

Sledge makes a good point here. Eye cleanliness is very individual (let alone mind cleanliness!) - and you should be very clear about what it means to you as you talk to your vendor e.g., "I don't want to see anything while scrutinizing it from all angles" vs. "given my setting, I am satisfied if it is eye clean from the top from 6 inches" or whatever your personal preference might be!
