My Martin Flyer setting has been on consignment with JBEG for a while now with a few serious nibbles, but no purchase. I'm not lowering the price anymore, so I'm considering keeping it and setting a new stone in it. I had hoped to take the proceeds from this and buy earrings, but I already did that (thank you DH!) so the next item on my list would be a step cut RHR.

I don't have a budget (that doesn't mean it's unlimited, quite the opposite), but am willing to look at any stones you think would compliment the setting. I'm willing to look at eBay stones as long as there is a return policy.

For the pros out there, the stone that was in the setting originally measured: 9.42 x 8.06 x 5.57mm....how much wiggle room do I have? Can the head be replaced so that a smaller stone will fit and the entire ring "shrunk" down? For reference, here's the setting:

Thanks to anyone willing to help me with this!

Step 1: Talk to some really good jewelers about replacing the head.

Do you want a diamond or colored gem?

Thanks Dreamer! I am going to pop into my jeweler (where I bought the setting) on Tuesday when they open to see what he says.

As much as I'd love a diamond, especially a faint yellow (S-W) range, I'm pretty sure that it's way beyond my means at this point. I love colored stones, but am very uneducated about them, though I've spent the afternoon reading over there. I love green tsavorite, very pale aquamarine, pale yellow (not sure what stones this would include)....I know that ruby, emerald and sapphire will also probably be out of budget. I'm open to suggestions...

Of course, the other thing I could start doing is saving for a step cut diamond, but I really can't justify the cost and it will likely take me 10 years to save the funds....wait, that will give me one really nice ring to give to each of my kids!! Did I find a good enough reason yet??? :cheeky:

A blue sapphire?

Unfortunately, a blue sapphire that size would cost several thousand dollars. But I think you should go for a spinel, yenny, because they are pretty much next in hardness to sapphire and worth putting in a nice setting like you have. Ideally, I think you should find a stone or have one cut to fit the setting as it is rather than trying to out in a smaller head and then take the chance of messing up the pave on the shank. Spinel comes in lots of colors, too.

There's a pink spinel that might work...4th row on far right...

But check your preloved thread because Brightice is asking you a question about the setting.

Thanks DS! That is a lovely spinel, but I would prefer not to get another oval.

Thanks for the heads up about the question in the othher thread. I responded to brightice there. :))

Ugh, I wasn't even thinking about it being another oval, sorry! I am at my limit on round stones, so I know what you mean. I am getting a RHR now that takes a round, and that needs to be the last one! I want other shape stones, too! I will say, it is a pain having a setting and trying to get a stone with all the characteristics you want in exactly the right size. So it would be good if it will work for Brightice!

No worries DS! Yes, it would be lovely if it worked out with brightice! I think a pad sapphire would look gorgeous in this setting!

Yennyfire, I posted in your preloved thread.

I replied back. :D
