So I am a big fan of Dana at master cut gems. I purchased an untreated periwinkle sapphire from him a year ago and it is a beautiful unique color. So when I saw that he listed a Trillion cut untreated ruby on Valentines day I snatched it up! It is listed as 1.08cttw, 6.5mm, VS2-SI1, and off-course untreated. The clarity is the only thing that worries me. I have never seen a good ruby before so I don't have anything with which to judge. Dana states that the clarity is better than the photos he provides so I thought I'd take a chance. I am thinking of setting it in martini claw prongs or a thin bezel with the chain attached to the setting.

What do you all think? I will take pictures when I receive it!

I dislike it when the inclusions are black, preferring them to be clear so they don't stand out too much against the body colour of the stone. Due to the clarity, I would prong set it instead of bezel set, especially that large black inclusion right at a pointy tip.

I tend to agree with you, I would prefer them to be clear. However, I'm hoping in such a small stone maybe they won't be as noticeable? Do you think heating the stone would diminish the appearance of the black inclusions if they are to obvious?

Heating will fuse or "heal" the clear ones so they will be less noticeable. I'm afraid the black ones will stay. They are a different type of inclusion. The clear ones are internal fractures or feathers. The black ones are other minerals embedded within.

If heating would have improved it, trust me, somewhere in the gemstone chain it would have been done. In something so small, you won't see the inclusions but the overall colour may be hindered (ie it may appear darker).

I have a 2.9ct ruby trilliant set into a pendant and it's not big. Are you prepared that this will be quite small? It will probably benefit from a halo to oomph up its presence a bit.

BTW do you prefer purple red or orange red? I suspect this one will have orange in it.

Thanks for the advice LD. As for color Dana has assured me it is a beautiful red and I would prefer orange over purple or pink. Also, I am prepared for a small stone, I'm a small person (just above 5 feet) so I like smaller pieces. However, I love your suggestion of a halo! I think a diamond halo would look very pretty.
