After we contacted UD about the stone not matching the certificate, they arranged for us to ship it overnight to them so they could take a look at it. They refused to acknowledge that the stone did not match the certificate, but they were willing to send a stone to the appraiser so we could look at what they had to offer. My wonderful fiance worked out a deal that they would send the stone to the appraiser who would examine the stone with me and we would decide which one to get. Well they are sending 2 stones, one EGL and one GIA. Our goal stone is a well cut, J or better, eyeclean stone. I know about EGL being off, so the EGL is graded as a H VS1. Both stones are laser inscribed so the stone mixup does not happen again! I ran the numbers through the cut advisor, and the EGL stone scored 1.8 while the GIA was a 2.4.

EGL stone
1.70 round brilliant H VS1
7.69-7.65 x 4.75 mm
total depth: 61.9%
table width: 55%
crown height: 16%
pavilion depth: 43%
girdle: medium, faceted
no cutlet
polish and symmetry both excellent
no fluorescence

GIA stone
1.76 round brilliant J SI2
7.71-7.76 x 4.78 mm
total depth: 61.8%
table width: 57%
crown angle: 35.0 degrees
pavilion angle: 41.0 degrees
girdle: thin to slightly thick, faceted
no cutlet
polish and symmetry both excellent
no fluorescence

I will be going over both stones with Chris at AGA tomorrow. Which stone will sparkle more? Which stone will look better?

No speculation. Just look them over with Chris tomorrow. You''re in good hands.

See which one you prefer when you see them.

Thanks for the input. I haven't worked with Chris before. Hopefully everything will turn out fine and I will not have to go through looking for a stone again. How much does the cut advisor make a difference? The EGL stone is rated better, but it is an EGL...

GIA round that data too much to make a distinction.
And do not use HCA for selection - the stone could be OK.

Well Gary was right. Both stones were fine and I couldn''t really tell them apart. Both stones were solid Js, but the EGL was a VS2 and the GIA was a SI2. I was able to see the inclusion on the table of the GIA stone, so we went with the EGL stone. Hopefully I will have my ring by the end of the week!
