I''m a completely new to the process and I have a question for the vendors.

Would it be unethical for me to purchase 2 stones on-line from 2 different vendors, pick out the best one and return the other one? I want to be fair to me and to the vendors. Since all I can go on is stats and I can not see the stones, I find on-line buying very difficult. I guess each vendor would have a 50/50 chance of a sale.

I understand I would be paying extra shipping, but I''d be saving so much money on the lower prices on-line and taxes.

Thank you.

If you're paying using credit card, vendor will loose up to 6% of the diamond price on this transaction.

You may want to consider sending stones to independent appraiser for comparison without paying for the diamonds.

Ditto what Leonid said. There may even be an appraiser in your local area that the vendors can send to so you can see them, too.

Yes I would see if you can get the stones shipped to a independent appraiser in your area, then there is no cash exchanged for purchase and the IA takes the responsibility of the stones for that period of time. You go in to see the stones, the IA runs their reports...and you've got it all taken care of in one fell swoop and your decision is made!

You'd still have to pay shipping but there aren't any cc costs that anyone has to pay. Also, you may see if the vendors are willing to send you the stones with a deposit on a card or something instead of the full purchase price. I know a few people on here have gotten stones shipped to them without having to pay for them...so that they can make a decision. This may depend on the vendor's level of comfortability with you and the transaction, but it's worth asking. All they can say is no.

Best of luck!

I previewed 2 diamonds myself. More than a few people have reported on the Forum that they compared 2 diamonds prior to making their final purchase decision. The local appraiser approach works well. You get to see the diamonds side by side, in person, and both parties save $$$.

View them in all types of lighting. Mock set them against the metal you plan to use to get an idea of the look once the diamond is set. Diamonds are subjective. What you like may not appeal to someone else. A diamond that you don't select may be "the one" for another person.

The diamond buying experience should be enjoyed. Have fun with it! If you prefer one you preview then you are halfway home. Gotta get the set, of course. If you don't like either, then you've had a great learning experience to build on. Of course,.... You could love both and have a really tough decision to make!

Even if the stone is returned on the same credit card.

The vendor is liable for the cc surcharge only if the paperwork goes through. If the amount is held electronically then cancelled, there is no cost to anyone. It is really a loophole in the system - that way you get to preview the stone then wire funds if you decide to keep. Not all jewelers will do this, and some do it selectively. It is also why the preview time for someone who does this is a relatively short 7-10 days...after that period the cc company gets antsy and expects to see evidence of the transaction.

In addition, while you have the stone, it is unavailable for the jeweler to sell to someone else; and if the jeweler has this on memo, neither can his supplier.

So my response to this is if you agree to be responsible for the actual costs that the jeweler incurs including any hidden ones like this and are up front with them so that they agree with what you're doing, I think most would probably be willing to go along for a short period.

I understand credit card companies change sellers a fee of 1-3% of the purchase price (possibly higher), depending on which cc is used, when merchandise is purchased. I assumed the seller received a credit back for the fee if the merchandise is returned and the charge is reversed. Are you telling me that if I buy a pair of shoes at Nordstrom, then change my mind and return them, the store still has to pay the credit card fee?

Also find out whether the same vendor (either of them) can obtain both stones for you and let you choose. Many vendors have access to the same stones.
