Hi everyone-

I love to read about diamonds and settings, but sometimes I feel like I get lost in the language. Have there been any threads, or are there any websites you could recommend, that talk about different types of prongs, or pave, or other setting details? (I looked at the list of useful links at the top and didn't find one) Lots of places to read about the 4Cs, but I hear about claw prongs or u prongs or mushroom pave or fishtail pave or whatever and I'm bewildered!

For instance, there is a particular Mark Patterson setting I love, but I have no idea any of the nitty-gritty details that so many PSers seem to get! Could you describe the setting in technical terms? Here is a picture, and there are also more pictures as the third engagement ring on MP's website (which does not have a direct link to the ring...super annoying!). It would be really nice to understand the features that make it so attractive to me so that I could take that knowledge and expand my thought process.

Thanks PSers! It's amazing what this bunch knows!

Hi sillyberry,

I'm still learning all the terms too, but i'll do my best to decode it, and others can jump in and correct me.
I'll make this very basic in case boys are reading too.

Description from the website:

Three sided micro pave set engagement ring with 104 round brilliant cut diamonds weighing 0.63 carats.

Three sided - diamonds on all surfaces of the band except the surface that touches your finger (eg. top and both sides)

micropave - lots of tiny diamonds set together, paved with tiny diamonds

to this I would add:

the center stone appears to be a modern cushion brilliant (could be wrong on this)

It has double prongs - the center stone is set with 4 sets of 2 tiny prongs (often double prongs are pointed like claws, but these ones appear to be rounded)

It is surrounded by a square-ish (cushion shaped?) halo - the center stone is surrounded by a border of tiny diamonds

The outside of the basket is also covered in pave - the sides of the part of the ring the center diamond rests in (the basket) has tiny diamonds on it too.

The pave only goes halfway down the shank - Only the top half of the band of the ring is covered in pave

The halo doesn't appear to have an airline - looking from the top down, there is no gap between the center stone and the halo surrounding it.

Someone else will have to describe the specific pave style (maybe shared prong?)

cheers,
HD
