My dad is not really sentimental, and it would definitely feel awkward for us to dance to one of the usual sappy father/daughter dance songs, so I''m trying to think outside the box here. I was trying to think of artists that he and I both like or used to listen to when I was growing up because that would be more fitting for us, but I still want a slow song that is NOT about romantic love.

Can anyone think of songs by Billy Joel, Aerosmith, or Tom Petty that would be slow enough to dance to and not about romantic love?

THe ONLY songs I can think of are Lullabye or She''s Got a Way by Billy Joel, but Lullabye is definitely just that, a lullabye, so it feels a bit, well, young, and She''s Got a Way does have some lyrics that might be inappropriate. What do you think? Would you be weirded out to see a father/daughter dance to either of these songs at a wedding?

Lullabye
Goodnight, my angel

Time to close your eyes

And save these questions for another day

I think I know what you''ve been asking me

I think you know what I''ve been trying to say

I promised I would never leave you

And you should always know

Wherever you may go

No matter where you are

I never will be far away

Goodnight, my angel

Now it''s time to sleep

And still so many things I want to say

Remember all the songs you sang for me

When we went sailing on an emerald bay

And like a boat out on the ocean

I''m rocking you to sleep

The water''s dark and deep

Inside this ancient heart

You''ll always be a part of me

Goodnight, my angel

Now it''s time to dream

And dream how wonderful your life will be

Someday your child may cry

And if you sing this lullabye

Then in your heart

There will always be a part of me

Someday we''ll all be gone

But lullabyes go on and on...

They never die

That''s how you

And I

Will be

She''s Got a Way

She''s got a way about her

I don''t know what it is

But I know that I can''t live without her

She''s got a way of pleasin''

I don''t know what it is

But there doesn''t have to be a reason

Anyway

She''s got a smile that heals me

I don''t know why it is

But I have to laugh when she reveals me

She''s got a way of talkin''

I don''t know what it is

But it lifts me up when we are walkin''

Anywhere

She comes to me when I''m feelin'' down

Inspires me without a sound

She touches me and I get turned around

She''s got a way of showin''

How I make her feel

And I find the strength to keep on goin''

She''s got a light around her

And everywhere she goes

A million dreams of love surround her

Everywhere

She comes to me when I''m feelin'' down

Inspires me without a sound

She touches me and I get turned around

She''s got a smile that heals me

I don''t know why it is

But I have to laugh when she reveals me

She''s got a way about her

I don''t know what it is

But I know that I can''t live without her

Anyway

I''m interested in seeing what people come up with for this as well. As for those songs, I have never heard the first one, but the lyrics are better than the second song (imo.)

I like Lullaby. I also love the song "Father and Daughter" by Paul Simon. It might be a little fast, though.:)

If you ever awake
In the mirror of a bad dream
And for a fraction of a second,
You can''t remember where you are
Just open your window
And follow your memories
Upstream
To the meadow in the mountain
Where we counted every falling star
I believe the light that shines on you
Will shine on you forever
(forever)
And though I can''t guaruntee there''s nothing scary
Hidin'' under your bed
I''m gonna
Stand guard
Like the postcard
Of the golden retriever
And never leave
''Til I leave you
With a sweet dream in your head
[CHORUS]
I''m gonna watch you shine
Gonna watch you grow
Gonna paint a sign
So you always know
As long as one and one is two
Ooh ooh
There could never be a father
Love his daughter more than I love you
Trust your intuition
It''s just like going fishin''
You cast your line and
Hope you get a bite
But you don''t need to waste your time
Worryin'' about the marketplace
Trying to help the human race
Struggling to survive
It''s as harsh as night
[CHORUS x2]

My first thought was "You''re my Best Friend" by queen, a little out there, but hey, its unconventional

Ooo. you make me live
whatever this world can give to me
It''s you, you''re all I see
Ooo, you make me live now honey
Ooo, you make me live
You''re the best friend
that I ever had
I''ve been with you such a long time
You''re my sunshine
And I want you to know
That my feelings are true
I really love you
You''re my best friend
Ooo, you make me live
I''ve been wandering round
But I still come back to you
In rain or shine
You''ve stood by me girl
I''m happy, happy at home
You''re my best friend.
You''re the first one
When things turn out bad
You know I''ll never be lonely
You''re my only one
And I love
The things that you do
You''re my best friend
Ooo, you make me live.
I''m happy, happy at home
You''re my best friend
You''re my best friend
Ooo, you make me live
You, you''re my best friend.
(Electric Piano - John Deacon)

Well it''s not Tom Petty, Aerosmith, or Billy Joel, but I think I''m going to use the Beatles "All You Need is Love". The thought of a sappy dance with my dad kind of makes me cringe, I liked the idea of an upbeat, hopeful song that is still slow enough to slow dance to.

My dad and I danced to "Volare"(Nel Blu Di Pinto Di Blu) by Dean Martin at my 21st, so I can imagine there will be a repeat performance at my wedding... absolutely no idea why, but its a favourite of ours! Probably not terribly appropriate, but then half of its in Italian, so who cares??!! LOL

this link had a few good suggestions, some of which could be weddingy. stevie wonder has a few that are more upbeat and appropriate, although not as rock. good luck!

omg, I always thought that Sweet Child of Mine by Guns N Roses would be so awesome for a parent-child dance at a wedding! (I keep telling FF that he needs to dance with his mother to that song, but he has vetoed the suggestion)

I love Billy Joel, so your first two suggestions are A-OK in my book. What about Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely? It's about his daughter and is a sweet, not too sappy song.

Also, angielea, I love that Queen song! So awesome.

Yay for Billy Joel. My dad and I will be dancing to Piano Man. Long before I was born, my dad played piano in bars. When I was little it was my absolute favorite song he would play and sing to me. I cry just thinking about dancing to it with him, so even though it''s a bar song... I guess it''s sappy for me.

We're doing Fly Me to the Moon, Sinatra, but mostly because he used to sing it to me and swing me around the room when I was a toddler.

Lullabye was the song my father and stepmother did their first dance to, so I don't really see it as a father-daughter song.

Let's see--there is Areosmith Don't Want to Miss A Thing, which has the nice subtext of the father/daughter relationship from the movie? (armageddon)

Awe, I got really excited about Sweet Child of Mine, but FI told me he thinks that would be stupid. Way harsh! I''ll definitely consider Pianoman because Dad and I used to sing that all the time, and I''m going to take a listen to all teh other ones suggested that I don''t know.

Pooh! What if you used the Sheryl Crow cover? A little less hard rock, still way awesome. Or you could just say he has to choose between that and a Journey power ballad.

How about Sweet Baby James by James Talyor? Non-sappy, parent-child lullabye...

Thanks for all the suggestions!

After spending hours previewing and buying songs on Itunes it''s down to...

I Wish You Peace, by The Eagles

I wish you peace when the cold winds blow
Warmed by the fire''s glow
I wish you comfort in the, the lonely time
And arms to hold you when you ache inside

I wish you hope when things are going bad
Kind words when times are sad
I wish you shelter from the, the raging wind
Cooling waters at the fever''s end

I wish you peace when times are hard
The light to guide you through the dark
And when storms are high and your, your dreams are low

I wish you the strength to let love grow on,
I wish you the strength to let love flow,

I wish you peace when times are hard
A light to guide you through the dark
And when storms are high and your, you dreams are low
I wish you the strength to let let grown on,
I wish you the strength to let love flow,
I wish you the strength to let love glow on
I wish you the strength to let love go on.

Or
Wildflowers, by Tom Petty
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
Sail away, kill off the hours
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, find you a lover
Go away somewhere all bright and new
I have seen no other
Who compares with you

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong in a boat out at sea
You belong with your love on your arm
You belong somewhere you feel free

Run away, go find a lover
Run away, let your heart be your guide
You deserve the deepest of cover
You belong in that home by and by

You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free

(Repeat Chorus)

I like the Eagles song better in terms of the lyrics and the slowness, but I haven''t talked to my dad yet to see what he thinks. I really hope he at least likes one of them, because I think I''m out of ideas. What do you all think of these 2 songs?
