UK tax

Speed limits aren't just there to incovenience you. They are there to try and make sure everyone is safe! I am shaking my head in disbelief at your comments.

I also cautiously go through red lights and stop signs when I have clear vision both ways.

Because I use my common sense. A traffic light is not more intelligent than I am. Most speed limits don't take into consideration whether I'm in a truck or an Aston Martin, whether it's raining, fog, night or day, my age, if I've done 10,000 miles in my life or 200,000, my driver training, my vision, .... But I do.

And I haven't lost a point for 5 years now, have never lost more than 4 points, nor have I ever hit anything or been hit in 20 years. I must be doing something right.

I'm best at being myself.

Wow!! Cautiously go thro red lights!!! Are you above the traffic laws? I''d hate to live where you drive if that''s your argument.

I have a question....... if i buy abroad and bring a diamond into the UK, and for arguments sake, don''t declare the item thus not paying the 17.5% VAT AND then rather clumsily lose the diamond, will not delcaring the item affect my insurance claim?

This is purely a hypothetical situation!!!

The U.S has no import tax for loose stones so there would not be a penalty.
I am getting tired of Maisie being the policeman for the Uk on here. Every post we get a lecture. I sent some jewelry to my nieces in the U.K and they were opened and my niece had to pay the duty on they. She negotiated, they reduced it by half, and now I learned that jewels from relatives or antique jewelry are exempt from taxes so I''ve learned what to do.
I should think that Maisie had paid enough in taxes to her govt. I know I had a big tax bill, and want to pay my fair share, but a gift to my relatives shouldn''t have a tax on it. I do not cry for our gov''t on the issue of taxes.

I have copied and pasted this from the HM Customs website:


2.4 Gifts

Goods sent as a gift are not free of import duties and import VAT. However, customs duty will not be collected if the amount is less than £7, and import VAT is not chargeable if:

• the value of the gift does not exceed £36
• the customs declaration is completed correctly
• the gift has been sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country
• the gift is for the use of either yourself or your family
• there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly
• the gift is of an occasional nature only eg for a birthday or anniversary.

Please note the purchase of goods from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, is treated as a ‘commercial consignment’ for which the import VAT relief threshold is £18 (paragraph 2.3 refers).

The roads where I live are totally deserted after 7pm. Waiting for a red-light to change when the area is unmistakably clear is not for me, regardless of what some law says. Put other cars in the area of course I'll wait for green--no desire to cause trouble or get caught.
