Before I begin, I should mention that I''m from Canada.

After finally taking the plunge and purchasing a diamond from Whiteflash http://www.whiteflash.com/round_ideal_cut/Round-Ideal-Cut-cut-diamond-1467014.htm# , I arranged for the diamond to be sent directly to Mark Morrell. As of now, the diamond is at Mark''s and he''s waiting for my wire payment to go through before beginning any work. Well, I thought I had all my bases covered until I was reading a random thread last night and realized that I should''ve probably had the stone sent to an independent appraiser first(HOW did I miss this in doing my research??!!). I always thought that I would just have the whole thing appraised locally upon completion but apparently it is common(from what I''ve read here) to have someone else appraise the diamond before even setting it. So now I''m not sure what to do. I''ve contacted Mark and explained the situation(waiting for his reply). I feel bad I might have to put him in the position to do work that I should''ve already taken care of on my own(ie. ask Whiteflash to send my diamond to my chosen appraiser and have appraiser send stone to Mark and back to appraiser before sending it to me).

My question at this point is, should I even bother with a separate appraisal in the U.S. or should I just wait until it gets here? I can''t blame Whiteflash but I wish my rep would''ve asked if I had wanted a separate appraisal.

Honestly, I would just wait. WF is a very reputable vendor and I'd be pretty confident your stone is what they (and the cert) says it is. I purshased a stone earlier this year from GOG and had it set first before doing the appraisal. I think a lot of folks do that, but it's personal preference.

What you did wasn't incorrect, just another way of doing it. I didn't sent my stone to an appraiser. I trusted WF because of their reputation. I had them send the stone to me, I looked at it for a while, then mailed it off to a different vendor for a custom setting. I still never got my ring appraised. It is insured based on what I paid.

I wouldn't expect WF to talk to you about your next step or asking you about an appraisal. It's a choice some people make but I bet most don't. Mark Morrell could tell you if the laser inscription matches the report number if you are worried about not receiving the right stone.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it at this point. You'd be paying for extra shipping 2 ways and the appraisal. It looks like you are going to have a beautiful ring when it's done!!

Ditto Swing, you have nothing to worry about!

You picked a great stone, no worries! I echo the ladies, just have it appraised after it''s done.
