UGH, I am starting to rethink the whole cushion idea.

Seems like choosing a cushion is a big PITA. So many unknowns! And nobody has the perfect one I am looking for anyway. Cut grade means nothing, cuts are all different, some are high carat weight but face up small and vice versa... Forget it!
Should I just go with the round? At least it's more predictable, right?

I know it's a matter of preference and hard to give advice, so this is more of a rant post, I suppose. But it just seems like buying a round (which I love too) is a more sensible choice in terms of being able to choose the right one for the budget. :errrr:
 
It's a personal preference. Even though fancies are a pain to shop for sometimes, I would much rather have one than a RB and would never have been happy with a round brilliant.
 
I am looking for a cushion cut too so I feel your pain. I like rounds too but I've loved and wanted a cushion for years so I'm sticking with it.

If you say you love rounds and are getting frustrated with this process, maybe just go for that. Like you said, personal preference.
 
Like Gypsy said I love fancies and would not want a round. But if you DO ACTUALLY want a round, then maybe you should. I would hate for you to start to loath the search for your ring. But if you are settling because you dont like searching then i say dont settle. Just think, when you find it it will be that much more satisfying

LOL, well, don't give up yet. Go to Good Old gold and watch the videos and educate yourself on cushion cuts. Also on videos on color and clarity.

Antique cut cushions do not show more color than the crushed ice look in a cushion...in fact the crushed ice shows more color and that is why so many colored diamonds have that crushed ice faceting (cushions and radiants).

The better the cut, the whiter the diamond will face up. You just want to stay away from a stone that has a lot of light leaking through the stone which means it will not be the best performing stone. That is why after watching the videos on cushion cuts you can go to JA and get ASETs on 3 stones and pick which stone faces up the nicest. Also GOG carries modern cushion cuts as well and he can find you what you are looking for and test the stones for the best performing stone.

MRB are so common. I've just never cared for that type of faceting or round stones until I saw the faceting on the Antique cut OEC's. They are the only rounds that I like and I like them a lot.

The one I posted before is an 8 main "cushion brilliant" that faces up really large and is under $12k....It is not an antique chunky faceted cushion. You might really like the faceting of the 8 main cushion brilliant if you don't like the AVC's. Might be worth getting the ASET from JA. Nice large 2c cushion for the price IMO

Compare the 2c I SI2 to this 2.4c I VVS....they are the EXACT same size face up but the 2.4c is about $10,000 more:

Watch the videos and it won't be that hard to find a great cushion cut within your budget.

No, in seriousness, when you think of your ideal ring, do you have a cushion flash in your head? If so, don't give up. If you see an indiscriminately shaped stone, just a strong preference for a particular size or color, then perhaps entertain the idea of going down the easier MRB road.

Personally, I wouldn't own a solitaire MRB. I looked at them before I bought my last cushion, but they did nothing for me. :(sad An OEC though - I'd definitely take one of those in a heartbeat! :love:

I wanted to piggy back on this a little. i was so ready to say "stay with a cushion dont give up" but something you said is making me think. You said that you looked at one and the size was underwhelming. Is there any reason you specifically want a 2 ct specifically? because like JustGinger said, if you just imagine your ring as one nice performing large stone then maybe you might want to consider other stones, not just a MRB or cushion. Because a cushion does face up smaller than other shapes. Have you looked at all the shapes on your hand? Because maybe a 2ct oval or pear or something( even a marquise) might quench your thirst for SIZE as well as be a little bit better for your budget. But like just ginger said, if you imagine your ring with a cushion then just wait till you find the perfect one. Its out there somewhere :)
 
This is a tough one for me because I own a 1ct RB and I am a very traditional-type girl when it comes to style. If I were to go with a cushion I would want it rectangular in shape as opposed to a perfect square, and those are even harder to come by. However, I am wondering if my desire for a cushion is just wanting something different, and that's just a good enough reason to stray away from the more common RB. I love love the look of RBs, and the only reason I wanted an elongated cushions is because I liked the shape on my thin long fingers. I am worried though that I will fall out of love with the cushion, whereas I know I will always love RBs. Also, size is very important to me, I want it to face bigger, so I am not sure cushion is worth the sacrifice :)

I am considering both at the moment, although leaning towards a 2 ct RB.

For me, rounds are nice but no matter how hard I try, are not IT for me. Doesn't matter if they face up bigger or whatever. Well cut fancies are not easy to find. Well cut fancies with the right colour and clarity makes it more of a challenge. Well cut fancies with the right colour and clarity and NOT too deep is going to take a while. You must be patient because it will be worth it when it finally comes along.

However, it seems like you are doubting your choice for a different reason. Have you seen well cut cushions in the size you want in person? If that's what you want, hold out for it. Don't get sidetracked and "settle".

YES!!! It's gorgeous! But it's also very hard to find one that scores 1.0 on the HCA!!!! I'd snatch it up! especially if you prefer rounds. You could always compromise and get the round center stone but put it in a cushion squarish halo...

If you're set on the round, that's great.

A two ct stone I think looks best in a simple setting. Classic Tiffany style or one with diamonds on the shank of you really want more bling. Though you don't need it. I looked at your other tread and the solitaire really looks great. But I personally would just do a Tiffany setting. Or a diamond one that was similar in width to your band. But again I love a 6 prong Tiffany. But I bet you want to mix it up

I hear what you are saying... Side stones might be a bit of an overkill with a 2 ct on a size 4.75 finger. A solitaire with diamonds on the shank is what I wanted originally, but I also want a more interesting basket, perhaps with a double claw prong with some diamonds underneath. Vatche has a beautiful Corsica 1005 pave, but I don't see it for a round.

The wedding band is not mine, I am planning to redo mine based on the setting I choose.
