I love the UFC, and love Randy Couture...anyone else planning to watch???

If you are, then the following post will make sense to you...

I feel so uncomfortable about this upcoming fight. I think Randy Couture is a great fighter...and I really love watching...it''s very inspirational. But I feel like UFC caved in a way by giving Brock Lesnar a title shot after 2 fights...where he is 1 and 1. Yes, Brocks'' size is impressive and so is his fan base from both real and fake wrestling...but, I''ve always felt like the fighters in the UFC have earned their shots at the title...and Brock Lesnar is the first one I feel they put up more for the sheer show of it and less because he''s genuinely deserving of it. And esspecially when Brock refered to Couture as a "stepping stone"
emotion-40.gif
.

Am I alone in this though? Does anyone out there believe Brock deserves this shot?

I LOVE UFC!!!!!!!!! We have big UFC parties for every event! We even got several friends into UFC because we love it so much.

Stephan Bonnar is an MAT Specialist, like my husband, so they know each other pretty well.

ANYWAY . . .

I hate Lesnar, he''s a big brute, just like Tim Sylvia. I hate Sylvia, too.

The thing with the UFC is that Dana White gives a lot of guys title shots when they don''t really deserve them--Anderson Silva, Dan Henderson, Nogueira, and a bunch of Pride guys got title shots after just a couple fights. I think Dana White is ALL about the Benjamins, and he''ll give anyone a title shot if it will bring some more attention and money to the UFC. But I really don''t mind, because it''s always a good show!

How disappointing was the Silva/Cote fight? What a letdown!

We met Silva, Florian, and a bunch of other guys at the MGM Grand in Vegas a couple years ago. We were there on vacation during an event (I HATE Vegas, but anyway . . . ) and all of a sudden we see Andrei Arlovski walking by with a ton of huge guys. I was so excited! I don''t think we''d ever go to a live event, we wouldn''t really fit in with that crowd, but we love watching on PPV!

GSP and Arlovski are my favorites. You?

I just realized I didn''t really respond to your question, I was just so excited that someone else on PS likes UFC!

I have no problem with this fight, although I do love Couture and I really hope he wins.

I can''t get enough UFC, it''s amazing to watch them fight. They are so incredibly skilled.

We love UFC! We've flown to Vegas just to go see the fights...and most recently, we actually saw Anderson Sliva fight in July when he dropped down to the other weight class.

My DH good friend trains and owns a gym downtown--and so thru him we've had the opportunity to meet a few "heavy hitters" like Shone Carter and Andre Arlovski--more or less those fighters that fight out of Chicago and run in similar circles to my husbands friend.

GSP is by far my favorite. I think he is really a great all around fighter, and extremely humbled even with much success. I also adore Forrest. Maybe it's his character, or his sense of humor, but he's really fun to watch--and I enjoy him. Forrest actually cornered for a fighter at the FNL we saw in July (in Vegas) and you'd be so surprised how "big" he is up close and personal.

I was so disappointed by the Silva/Cote fight
38.gif
. I can appreciate Silva because he has such speed...I mean, the guy is fast! But the UFC is constantly stroking him...I don't know if I'd say he's the best "pound for pound fighter ever"...he's good tho. It's unfortunate Cote got hurt
14.gif
. He was doing really well "pushing" Silva into the higher, harder rounds...it could have genuinely been a photo finish.

When I first fell in love with the UFC, I was so hot for Tito Ortiz. I thought he was just the greatest thing since sliced bread! But, I also got into the circut around the time he and Shamrock were having there big bruhahaha on The Ultimate Fighter...so, I blame my bad loyalities on all the hype.

It's exciting to watch the sport develop and mature...Dana White, say what you will about his motivation, has done a wonderful job keeping the sport afloat when so many others have tried and failed...including Pride. He's certainly a man with a plan...and under him, I believe the UFC can go nowhere but up.

Do you ever go to see the local fights? I know last weekend Chicago played host to an event, but the exact location escapes me. My DH would love to go, but for some reason, I cannot get into them. I feel like I'm watching a bum fight or something--it doesn't seem as professional, or organized and it bores me.

I am excited to find another UFC lover on PS...we can now have threads about the fights....woo hoo!

Ooooohhhh... me too, me too! My hubby turned me on to it when we started dating years ago. We''ve watched just about every fight.

Hey... aren''t we all Chicago gals?! LOL!

Sorry, I didn''t have time your posts. Will have to read this after work, but just wanted to post that I''m also a UFC fan!

Back off sister! I clearly staked my claim on "whose your celebrity crush 2008" thread...I''m having an Ashley Sandwich with GSP and Will Ferrell.

I usually shy away from being territorial, but if you ladies do so much as lay a hand on my man we are going to have problems.

lol, GSP is a dream boat...

Did you see the fight where he tweaked a certain part of his anatomy? Supposedly, that give him a big ol' adrenaline rush....I told my DH I should write that down for when GSP and I find some alone time

Well, maybe we can share GSP! He is dreamy and seems like SUCH a nice guy. BTW we met Wanderlei (sp?) Silva in the Las Vegas airport. DH almost had a heart attack he was so excited. We got some pictures with him and he was SO gracious. He thanked US?!? His son even got in one of the pictures (I think it was his son). Everyone around us were asking who he was when they left.

Okay, we can share...

GSP is nice, I can''t think of one bad thing to say about him...even when he lost his belt to that little guy whose name escapes me right now, he was so gracious under the obvious upset.

What do you think about the Couture v. Lesnar fight???

Ever since my daughter was born I have been out of the loop and have only watched a few fights with DH (he buys all of them). I can''t stay up that late anymore. DH hates Lesnar and is routing against him.

I just got so excited when I saw this thread! I LOVE UFC!!! I actually almost turned down a date with my now DH to stay home and watch The Ultimate Fighter. Instead he came over and watched it with me, and now I''ve got him hooked. We''re having a party at our house to watch the fight this weekend.

To answer the original question, yes, I think it is a little unfair that Lesnar is getting a title fight so soon. But if you watch a lot of UFC, then you know that Dana White is all about what brings in money. Why do you think they now have fights on PPV at least once a month? It does make some of the fights not worth purchasing, though, at least in my eyes. I wasn''t too upset that I missed the Silva/Cote fight last time, because it wasn''t something I could get myself excited about.

I am excited for this fight, though. It should at least be interesting. I am hoping Couture wins. I

Randy Couture!

My random UFC moment was actually on the way to my honeymoon. My husband and I were sitting in the airport bar waiting for our flight, and I see some huge guy walk by. My eyes bug out of my head and I start hitting my husband on the arm. It''s Tito Ortiz! Anyway, he was totally nice and signed the back of my wedding program (since that was what I had in my purse). My husband was laughing at me because he said I was going to turn into his stalker. And surprisingly enough, I saw him a couple of months later at Babies R Us. I didn''t go up to him that time, though, because I really would have felt like a stalker!

GSP is a total hottie!!
3.gif
Now normally I''d get right in there and fight you girls for GSP, buuuuuuutttt I''ll let him go for Rich Franklin. I think he''s a cutie, too!

I started watching UFC when Couture, Shamrock and Liddell were fighting a lot. I really like Randy Couture and I''m not sure what to think of this upcoming fight with Lesner. It doesn''t seem like a good match up at all. And I agree... Lesner is just a big brute. I don''t think I''ll be able to respect him as an MMA fighter until he gets some more technique and martial arts skills. All he does is ground and pound.

Has anyone seen the womens MMA fights? The last fight I saw with Gina Carano was really good. I was really impressed. The other girl took a beating, but just wouldn''t quit. Tough girl!!

Does anyone here like BJ Penn? I didn''t see him mentioned... he''s another favorite of mine. Such a nice, hard-working and focused guy. Love him!

Tacori, how cool that you got to meet Wanderlei! He seems like such a nice guy.

BJ Penn is okay, IMO. I hate, hate, hate that he licks the blood off his gloves at the end of the fight. Prehaps I have these feelings about BJ because I got introduced to UFC during his "I''m to good for everyone" stage where we wasn''t training or taking the sport seriously. However, now that he''s apparently recommitted himself, I''ll pay closer attention to him.

Yes, Dana White is all about the money. And that''s the business end of things. But, I think I feel so "ugh" about this fight because months ago the UFC decided to do action figures, and out of all their fighters--like GSP, Liddell, Griffin, Silva, Couture..and so on, they gave one of the figures (out of only 5 or 6) to the likeness of Brock Lesnar
emotion-40.gif
after he''d only had one fight...and LOST!!

I feel like Brock Lesnar has been given "opportunities" with the UFC, without actually earning them...and that, IMO, goes against what makes the UFC the powerhouse that it is. These fighters *work*...literally, blood sweat and tears are poured into their career and then here comes this ex-pro wrestler and they''ve rolled out the red carpet at the expense of real fighters who have really worked for this shot.

And what just P.O''s me off even more...is that Brock doesnt even appreciate it...he refers to Randy Couture as a stepping stone (how disrespectful.).

Oh, I have no shame...I would have said hello again. I used to love Tito. He was the one that really sucked me into the UFC. He was so well spoken.

I don''t like Tito. Never did. I think it was that special with him and Dana (where they were suppose to fight and he backed out)

Not cool! If I can''t stay up DH DVRs the fights so I could watch it in the morning. I love watching Anderson Silva fight too. He also seems like *such* a nice man.

I actually used to not like Tito at all. But then he was a coach on the reality show, and you saw that all his attitude was just really a persona, a character he was putting on. He generally is a nice person in real life, which I have heard from people that have worked with him as well. He was one of my favorite coaches ever on the show, because he really tried to help all of the kids learn and grow. Some of the other coaches have been huge jerkoffs, and it has maked me like them less as fighters. For example, I now HATE Matt Hughes.

Eeeek! I totally love UFC too! My other friends think I am crazy that I watch it so I never have anyone to discuss it with other than DH and his buddies. I took 5 years of karate growing up so I think I have a special place in my heart for MMA.

My husband and I always get the PPVs and have all of our friends over. We are super excited for this weekend. I am also a Couture fan and I am hoping we get to see Lesnar lose! I think that he is very much overrated due to his size and popularity.

I don''t know if you guys have checked out the line up for the PPV in December, but it looks awesome!

One of my friend''s nephews is training with a Gracie and is apparently doing very well. He plans to try out for the Ultimate Fighter at some point and I hope that he makes it so that I have someone to cheer on! I am totally jeaous of you girls who have met some of them in real life!

Yeah, Matt Hughes was such a jerk on the show. I always thought of him as this good ol'' farmer boy from Illinois, and now I cannot stand him. He''s a whiney little baby. After his two last fights (which were both losses) he has "quit" fighting. Suck it up, IMO, everyone loses--but thats a risk you take when you fight in MMA--you need to pick yourself up and move on.

I think its funny how all these "old" champs (spare Randy Couture) have been replaced by better, more well rounded fighters. The sport has changed big time.

The Gracies are really well respected, good for that kid!!!

The line up does look really good...I cannot wait. We''re having a party too! We''re kicking the night off with a little Xbox UFC too!

FI and I watch every UFC flight and usually have a party of some sort. I love it!!

I started watching in 04's, around UFC 40's, when my ex's roomate was training under one or two of the Gracie brothers here in Austin. (fyi, really nice guys) Those used to be some intense nights.
